210 drivers mirror replacement

I have a '97 E300D and the drivers side rear view mirror is partially detached.(not the housing) It will go out and in but not up and down. Also the mirror itself has lost its dimmer function and now is darker all the time with double image. Soooo I need to replace the mirror and need to know how to get it out and in again without breaking that very expensive internal mechanism. Does anyone have an a,b,c do it yourself plan for this? Thanks.

I have a video that shows how to remove the housing, but don't think I can describe it in words. Send me a PM or an email with your email address and I'll send back the video. Do not try this on your own - it is completely non-intuitive.

Hello Rick, Thanks, you can email me at hlgaspar@cox.net
Hope the mirror comes out without removing the whole thing, but either way I will be happy. Regards, Harvey Gaspar

Question Mirror replacement on E300D 1997

My mirror is now leaking. I understand I can replace the face of the mirror only. I am searching for instructions on how to unclip the face of the mirror and get the new face back on the original mounted assembly.

Thanks for any reply

On the W210, you push the mirror housing backward - ie toward the back of the car. It will hinge around the A-pillar, it takes a lot of force but you won't break it. Once you've pushed it back, if you look inside the housing you'll find a small retainer clip (sprung). Insert a screwdriver into the housing and undo the clip, let the mirror spring back, and then simply slide it off.

Its a bit tricky but shine a torch in there and you'll see the clip. It will be much easier if you get someone to hold the mirror while you undo the clip.

Once the housing is off, the method of removing/installing a new mirror will be self-explanatory. Be careful not to break any plastic lugs.

This website will show you how it works:

Some of the links don't work, if you find thats so then look at the URL in your address bar, if there are any CAPS in the url change them to lower case, that usually fixes it

PS this website contains the same data you find on those CDs on Ebay.

I am about to start this repair and found the link doesn't work anymore. The instructions sound pretty straightforward, but a fresh link to the site would be greatly appreciated if you have one.

I found the cost of a new glass with the auto dimming feature too expensive considering it has a limited lifetime. Mine began the double vision thing a year or more ago and then began to leak the brown liquid out. I have a completely useless mirror now as water seems to have gotten inside and is clouding the whole mess up.

I am considering just cutting the flexible membrane away and cleaning the mirror underneath. I also ordered a non-auto dimming replacement glass from the dealer for about 15% the cost of the auto dimming version. Given the option, I would have asked for a polarized glass and left the auto dimming feature in Stuttgart. Things like this should be designed to fail to a functional state, not this crap where you can't use it anymore.

Jim

There is no fresh link to the braingears site. It is permanently down.

The instructions are included with the 210 FSM DVD, available by calling 1-800-FOR-MERC.

Hey Parrot of Doom, that was a really good link. Took me a while to figure out how it works - reminds me of my W124 CDs - but there is a bunch of data there. Thanks, Jim

I ordered the plain-Jane driver's side mirror, cost me $65 from the dealer with my MBCA discount. Went to put it in, and found the old one was mechanically restrained by some clips and springs, but also by a double sided chunk of tape. Will see if there is such an animal at the dealership. My real issue is the new mirror is heated, but the electrical connector is not compatible. I am all for buying a new connector but need to know which wires are the heated circuit wires and which are the now defunct self dimming feature. Anyone have a wiring diagram? Thanks, Jim
