The more people pay prices like that for the lower mileage cars, the better the chance that our higher mileage cars will be worth more as well.
Nice looking car otherwise.

Maybe I should consider the $3500 paint job.

My window sticker says $33,000 and change.
That's in 1983 dollars. You do the math on inflation. An 83 Corvette was around $20 as I recall. Seems like new MB's are actualy cheaper if you account for inflation and such.

I think it is pretty insane to do a $7000 paint job for a 26 year old car.

In contrast, if I was going to do a daily driven car, I'd prep it myself and just have maco or whoever is reasonably compatent and cheap spray it with my supplied good paint. Key is in the prep work. And how picky you are. I have not seen an OEM paint job in years that did not have orange peel and generaly looked like crap from that low pressure painting or whatever the EPA makes them use anymore. 90% of what I see come out of body shops on regular every day cars is unacceptable. And I have seen a lot. Yes, I'm a picky SOB.

And there technicaly was no 83, the 82 was a C3, the 84 was a C4. I think there may have been a few hundred sold as 83's, but not enough to count. A base 82 C3 was $18,290. This is still a signficant defference compareing the overal complexity and nature of a corvette compared to what is really a pretty basic car like the 300D. And a 300D like mine was not even an S class, just a step up from the basic 240D, which was not cheap itself. Still seems to me the newer one's are proportionatly lower priced overall compared to way back when. Probibly because nobody would buy them with the likes of Lexus and company selling so relativly cheap. But anyway..

This car is definately nice, but I'd be wary of the "over dressed" appearance. 10k is WAY too
much, let alone his ridiculous 22k "become this years biggest fool and buy it now" price, it's clean but not 10-22k(!) perfect. The wheels have been re-painted (with what looks like $1.99 Wal-Mart bin paint) the carpets look stained and faded (no floormats, BTW) and why are the wheel wells undercoated?? In 1984 they were body color OVER an undercoating, for that price this thing had better be FACTORY mint. (Wait a minute, the vacuum setup looks more like an 83 than an 84...?) There are lots of these lower mileage "grandma" cars around, the only difference is this guy detailed the hell out of this car and added 15k to the pricetag. Another thing to keep in mind, most of the suspension and other rubber parts deteriorate moreso with age than with mileage...I bet most of the front-end is in need of attention, the shocks are probably weak too. Definately a great example to start with, but once again not at that price.. And the color combination looks weird, probably why it's so "rare". I'd much prefer silver or silver-blue...or even that metallic greenish color (what is that called?). The dark blue ("nautical" blue I believe?)/date combination also looks good. (most of the above is only my opinion BTW ) |

That guy is insane!! A car that old, even with the low mileage, will require some work to keep running perfectly on the road. For $22,000 I'd rather get this nice diesel E-Class. At least it has heated seats, traction control, anti lock brakes, will be much faster than its 1984 counter part, and is of higher quality due to the huge age difference. Looks nice inside out too!
I'll add that auction to My Ebay and see what it ends up selling for. Some people live in wonderland! |

True, you can buy an E-class for that money but I doubt it will be as long lasting or reliable as an old W123 diesel plus there isn't much that you DIY on those E-class diesels. You can always find a nice W123 with about 150K miles on it for less than a 1/4 of that $22K asking price.
I'm hooked on the old W123's.
