I think you might be referring to a vehicle description that states the car was originally a California car? (assuming it is anoher state now)

If so there shouldnt be any problem buying and registering the car back in california as long as its a diesel.

hope that helps

Had the current CA emmisions compliance equipment on it. At least when it was produced.

Everyone is correct. When you see a car advertised as a "CA car" it usually refers to the emissions.

Yes, but often sellers try to make "California car" synonymous with "zero rust".

There were differences in the California version MB Diesels in 84 and 85 related to emission control system and transmission/rear end ratios... or something like that.

You can register in California a car from any state if it has at least 7500 miles. You can register it with 0 miles if it has a 50-state emission control system. It also has to pass a California smog check if it's a gasser that's less than 30-years old, but any car in good condition will pass a California smog check. No restrictions on or checks of Diesels in California but the fine print of not modifying the engine and/or emission control system applies.

Different air filter, too.

If you look up "trap oxidizer" in this forum's search engine, you'll learn a great deal about the Californication of the 300D. It's history you'll read, since all the traps are, or should be, history.

However, one consequence of the original trap is that the CA models have a different air filter in a different location, compared to the so-called "federal" models. While the CA filter is more expensive, its location greatly improves access to the right side of the engine.

Actually, I think the rear end ratio's the same on CA and federal cars. I've got 2.88 gears in my federal car...

That said, I'm pretty sure that you're right on the tranny being different, andt he emission controls go without saying.

I'm not sure about the gears but I know my car has a non-limited slip rear. You have to be careful when the roads are wet.
