Unhappy No downshift from a stop or climbing hills

My wife just bought a 1979 300D. We previously owned a 1981 300 TD, so I know it's supposed to start out from a stop in 2nd, but does not. I had to manually shift the auto trans to first to get going and to climb any type of grade. Is there a possible easy fix, or do we take it straight to the mechanic?

Has it been sitting a long time?

My old 220D refused to downshift even with the kickdown floored when I first got it. Gradually got better the more I drove it.

Otherwise, check the control cable -- should be just all the way into the housing at idle, should then pull all the way out smoothy to full throttle. The plastic adjuster screw part often goes bad, allowing the housing to pull through the holder. This will cause early upshift/no kickdown.

Another thing to look at is the vacuum modulator. I believe that model uses vacuum to signal the inital downsift.
