NEW Diesel Injectors.... PIC
Hey,
What do you guys think of these BOSCH injectors ? I found them at ***********************, where I always buy everything for my benz. Do they seem cheap as far as price goes ? I want to make sure that they are not too cheap..... 43 bucks each... any opinions ? What else do I need to buy to change the injectors ?

Heat shield orientation
In the picture the shield is "up-side down" in reference to how
you will have to install "it". Turn it over before you place it in the injector bore! |

FastLane (our forum host) carries the injectors for your car at a comparable price and Phil can always be counted on to see to it that you get service and advice that you may need along the way.

Just replaced my injectors about a month ago, the heat shields were included with the new injectors. One out of the four leaked at the half. Replaced on warranty with no issues. I did pay the premium price of 57.00 a pop at a local NAPA. Oh ya, the core's are worth 15.00 as well.
What a difference, nailing gone, no more misquito fogger on start-up, and it's like I gained an extra cylinder. The origionals gave the 240D 200k +, I hope to get the same out of these.

Pre-Chamber, too?
Guys,
I'm planning to replace the injectors on my 205,000+ mile 300SDL. I see mention of the heat shields and injectors themselves. Any other parts I should get or clean up? Such as the pre-chamber? I've had two MB diesels over the years, but this is the first time I'll have ever pulled the injectors. John |

When I did mine the pre-chambers looked dirty, I sprayed them with a little card cleaner, but didn't want to go crazy. I don't know of a good way to clean them.
howardjnl I just did mine and the car runs great! It idles smoother than a diesel should! Just give Phil a call he will give you a good price. You will also want the heat shields, and new drip lines. The old ones will be rotten if their original. You also need to torque them to the right spec, I think it is 100ft pounds but am not sure, this is important to set the heat shields.

These injectors are not new, they're rebuilt. The only new part is usually the nozzle. I'm in the process of rebuilding my injectors with new nozzles. I think it's better to do it myself, not only because it's cheaper but also because by reusing the parts from my original injectors, hopefully everything will be better matched and balanced.

I keep thinking about injectors, just because mine have 260K on them and have never been out(just like the glow plugs).
But every, single diesel tech of any age and/or experience has told me if there not smokeing or tapping or doing anything really really bad, leave them the heck alone. I generaly don't listen to good advice, but I might this time around...

My experience with injectors is that if they have more than 100K on them they are less than optimal. Granted my experience is with my diesel Jetta and Chevy truck, but changing them out to a fresh set of rebuilds made a huge difference. The engine will sound much crisper, idle better and produce more power and less smoke. Injector wear is something that happens slowly so you don't really notice the difference. I highly recommend having any injectors checked at a local pump shop to make sure they are balanced, don't leak, etc. BTW, the injectors in the VW and Chevy are Bosch and look exactly like the MB units. There is a balancing advantage with rebuilding your own injectors-if you have a pop tester.
Even *rebuilt* bosch injectors should be pop tested to check the spray pattern. Bosch injectors performance spec is 10 bars tolerance. Mercedes only allows 5 bars. So, you can buy 5 rebuilt injectors and not meet Mercedes balance criteria. All the old diesel mechanics I've meet seem to prefer rebuilding an old set- they reuse the existing shims and they will ussually still pop test within the Mercedes range. Ppl seem to report a wide range on injector life. I have never decided if it's just a difference in what is acceptable to the individual owner or actual wear. Michael
