LMAO. You'd think I'd be able to tell the difference. It was Thing Other One... or Thing Two.

One too many Scotch rocks before trying to type that.

Show me a beetle with over 100,000 miles, and I'll show you an engine that has been apart and probably more than once. It also will have had leaking oil cooler, leaking push rod tubes, and MANY valve adjustments.

You can make anything go many miles if you just keep working on it and replacing and rebuilding as needed.

To compare a beetle with 200,000 miles to a Benz diesel with 200,000 miles, you are looking at lots of work done on the beetle and not much more than preventive maintenance on the Benz.

Have YOU ever driven a beetle for any number of miles at all? If so, how many?

Have a great day,
i've had mine 10 years so i know a thing or 2 about an air cooled vw

let's just agre to dis agre

You guys are full of S**t when it comes to Air-cooled VWs. We have been driving them for a long time, and have NEVER had a motor fail! And its funny how the motor in my 240D went at 267,000 miles...hmmmm My 1966 Bug has 125,000 on the original H case 1300...hmmm...That said, I love both the Bug and the 240D to death...they are both fantastic cars, but also from a complete different league. For the $24,000 that my 240D stickered for, you could buy a Bug new for $1600 and put a lot of motors, trannies, floor pans and whatnot in it before you get to $24,000. Considering it only costs like $500 to rebuild a Bug motor. Checked on what it costs for a OM616 rebuild lately??? It's going to cost me $1000 in parts to rebuild the BOTTOM end of the 240D motor. Anyway...just to put things in perspective...The 240D and the Beetle are two completely different cars, from two different time periods, and economic classes and are both extremely good at what they do...and are pretty damn cool to boot!

The one big difference between a 240D and a Bug is that the Bug is a rolling death trap. The bug has a gas tank right in front of the driver. I'd rather be in a wreck with a 240D than a Bug any day.

True Dat!!!

I don't really want to wreck either, but my Bug is a completely restored 1966 with numbers matching 1300, so I guess the Benz would be my choice as I would live and the car was only $1500.

Don't get me wrong, I don't really hate Bugs. I think the old ones are cool.

Out tooling around in the 240 today and I have yet to squash a insect on the windshield. How's that for keeping your car clean?? There are some advantages to driving under the limit...

I would have a hard time getting back in the bug for a long trip (or even a short one) after driving my 240D. And to think they each go about as far on a gallon of fuel, is there really any comparison....I dont think so

Never drove or rode in one, only mecedes I ever owned was a 300SD, but even I can see the merits of the KISS theory in that modle car..........It makes it the paramont of reliability.

Tangent,

Okay, so you've had it ten years, you still haven't told me how many miles you've driven it and with what repairs/rebuilds.

240Demon,

Same thing. 125,000 miles is impressive. It says a lot about your maintenance regimen and your tenacity. What repairs/rebuilds have you done in 125,000 miles?

Have a great day,

I posted this a few days ago in response to George D's 240D/190 thread

I am 34, and probably senile! I am a father of 2 and a husband to 1!

About 1 year ago, I sold a 1997 Porsche Twin Turbo. I owned this car because it IS the best Porsche manufactured (last of the air cooled Twins), in my opinion. I then bought a 2002 Mercedes G500 as this is the best and most capable SUV (Front, Rear and Center Diff locks) in my opinion.

You can see the trend, experience the best in Automotive engineering...I sold the G500 to drive a Mercedes Diesel, 1979 300SD. Wonderful car, but not the penultimate of German 'longevity' engineering, in MY opinion. So, I sought out the ultimate peice of iron ever manufacured in Germany, the German Taxi...240D, again, in MY opinion.

I could not be happier...slow, I guess so, but so would a Maserati compared to the 400HP in my Twin Turbo....it is not at all about spped and acceleration for me.

I look for every excuse to drive my car...I am off to Tahoe tomorrow (SF to Tahoe ~230 miles). When I drive this car, I cannot help but get overwhelmed by the solid, built to last, nature of this 4 speed manual little car. I love it...I will never sell this one!

318K miles and still going...every service record from day 1, every one! Chevron Delo EVERY 3K miles. Every stamp, filling 2 full books and 1/2 of the third. California Blue license plate, locally owned. A gem, my gem!

NOW...how in the world did I get the idea that the 240D is the pinnicle of automotive engineering? LARRY BIBLE! When I owned my 300SD, I quickly became addicted to this board. I started to connect with Larry's posts as he spoke of all of the details that resonated with me (not Chrome, aerodynamics, power, more cylinders etc...). So Larry, I do not know you but I want to thank you for your contributions! I am a 240er for life!

Oh ya, I owned a 1964 356SC cab in near show condition. This was a 3 owner car with 156K documented miles...3 rebuilds! I then had to spend close to $3K to get things up to snuff! Love the car, but would never drive it daily with the same expectations as I do my 240D. I will say that the car was DAMN reliable! I would have driven it to New York and back in a heart beat. But that reliability comes at a cost.

Anthony

Yes, a four cylinder 123 car can be very endearing. I'm glad that you're enjoying it.

When you buy a used 240D you get a great deal. I am in awe of the original owners, who chose the ultimate conservative vehicle when they obviously could have afforded something faster.

After owning the 240D for a few years, I'm wondering why we don't expect automobiles to last 50 or 60 years. The Citroen DS19 is another example. One of those built in 1952 is still very cutting edge on today's highway.

Maybe people shouldn't be allowed to buy a new car until their children have left home.
