lower molding installation

I am trying to install the lower door moldings on my 87 300D. I ordered all new clips from performance products. They look identical to the OEM clips. I am placing them in the molding track with the dowel pin still extended, then pressing inward. Only about half of them are holding. I have already broke some. Sometimes they won’t stay in the door and some won’t clip to the molding. The front fender piece worked fine, it’s the doors that are giving me trouble. Any one done this? What am I doing wrong? These are the lower moldings, at the bottom of the doors.
Thanks, Brian

I only use OEM when it comes to moulding fasteners
