1987 300d

I just bought a 1987 300D that is lightly hit in the front. It needs headlights, rad, fans, grille, and a hood. It starts well and has 270000 kms. I've never driven a benz but currently own a 1997 Jetta diesel. From what I have heard, these car/engine combinations are a nice driver, but I don't know. I'm not sure which car to keep. Any thoughts? Also any ideas regarding things to watch out for would be a help.

It all depends... did you get a good deal on the 300D? If so, then I would defiitely choose that one over the Jetta any day. I had a 2001 VW Jetta TDI and I sold it for a 1987 300D. I like the room and refinements in the 300D and the rattles in the Jetta were driving me crazy!

As far as the 300D is concerned, be sure and check the upper radiator hose when it is cold. There should be NO pressure in the hose and you should be able to completely squeeze it together. Also, take off the coolant overflow cap and see if there is any pressure in the system. Vaccuum is ok, but you sure don't want to see pressure. If this test proves good and the car is otherwise in good shape, I would think it would be worthy of a repair on the front-end.

As for things to watch out for, make sure you put in a new radiator and watch the temp guage closely. You don't want to crack the aluminum head on this engine... when it is running right, it is a downright rocket! You'll want to make sure your A/C is nice and cool and check to make sure the front vents blow air as well with the ACC on cool. If not, you'll be replacing the vacuum pods inside the dash. Not a fun job and a major PITA from what I've heard. You'll also want to check all of the links in the suspension and their various rubber bushings to make certain they are in good shape. I would also check the sunroof and keep it lubed with MB paste or you can be looking at a $1k + repair job! Other than that, everything else seems to be pretty tough on these cars... Oh, I would also check for ATF leaks around the transmission because I've seen quite a few leaking from the front pump seal.. If you have to replace this, you can also replace the front main seal at the same time. If the cruise control isn't working, you may have to replace the cruise stalk (I've seen several without any definition left) and/or resolder the amplifier in the car. It really is a simple task if you have lots of time and patience on your hands. Thinking about the cruise system, you'll also want to check the pushbutton controls in the ACC unit because these are also prone to weak cold-solder joints and may require a resolder as well.

Whew, I think that is about all...... Other than that, they are great cars when everything is right.
