vacuum modulator adjustments

Guys,

I have been reading these threads for several years and have always found information to help with my cars. I'm having problems finding the vacuum modulator on my 1985 300D. Its a California car with 332K and has always run well. A month ago or so the tranny started flaring from 3rd to 4th. I had a mechanic go through the entire vacuum system to make sure everything was correct. Now everything works except that the transmission is shifting way too smooth from 1st to 2nd and you almost can't tell when it shifts to 3rd. When it shifts to 4th I get the dreaded flare. If I keep my foot off the pedal it will hold the gear just fine, but if you push it, you get the flare (slipping). I've added TransX which at first definitely helped, but it's still flaring. I tried to adjust the modulator today, but could not get my hands on it. It is on the passenger side correct? Ofcourse the exhaust is in the way. Is the modulator the plastice device that has a line going towards the top of the engine? Not a mechanic here just someone with some experience at repairing simple things on these simple and incredibly engineered cars. Any help would be appreciated. I've searhed the threads associated with the modulator, but could not find specific instructions on how to get to this thing.

Doug:

You are on the right path. You'll notice a difference as you adjust it.
Try small adjustments first and test drive inbetween.

If my memory is right, its on the driver's side. Usually some green or red color the size of a silver dollar. You'll need to pry the little rubber cap off. Do a search and you'll find the direction in which to move it. You'll want firmer shifts I'd imagine.

Email me if you don't find it and I'll grab my notes from when I did it. Couple of years ago so I don't remember it all off the top of my head.

Don,

That would explain why I could not find it. I thought it was on the passenger side. I'll look around the drivers side which has alot more room to work on. I'll post my results tomorrow.

Thanks

Doug G

Steve's article is here.

One of these days I hope to make it to a TX GTG as well.

Modulator test:

It is on the drivers side.
As you see in the article by Steve you need a test rig.
He explains it. The fitting and banjo bolt, I got at a junk yard off the intake manifold back side that goes to the over booste switch then to the Alda.
The bolt and fitting on the fuel filter are wrong.
With this fitting and some tubing and a gauge you can set it.
It the pressure are not listed e-mail me and I will look them up in the Tranny manual.
