Words of wisdom before I change window seals
 

Getting ready to do front and rear window seals on a 1979 300SD, tired of it raining in trunk. How much interior trim needs to be removed. Reason being is I prefer to leave it alone if I can. Trim is old and brittle. I know the Chome needs to be on the gasket as its on the glas and the rope trick, but any others? This is the W116 chassis again.

you can take the front and rear windows out in under 5 minutes
if you cut out the gaskets from the inside with a utility knife.
the side window pillows will probably have to come off. on a
w123 you just push them up and pull back.

You will have to pull rear seat to remove the rear defroster wires.
We didn't pull the A pillars off. I do recommend using MB or simular sealer between the glass and the rubber. I didn't and my still leaked till and good bead was put between the glass and rubber.

How do you get sealer on a 116 seal before the glass is put in AND use the rope trick since rubber is 99% covered by the chrome trim? And that has to be in place before the window is popped in. Can't figure out that part for the life of me.

OK,,, have you considered just cutting out the dried seals.... and using Auto Silicone Sealer to stop your leak ? I just did this on my 80 240.... Or you could use 3M Window Sealer in Urethane....
This is probably easier to do on the rear.. but you mentioned the trunk....

Remember this is a 1979 300SD W116 ............the rear rubber is totally concealed under the trim that does not move.. its leaking past the window and dripping down from rear deck into the trunk.

Put the sealer, a small bead, in the rubber before the glass. Put the glass in the rubber then the chrome and then rope into the chassis.

Do not use urethane sealer it will not work! You want to use either MB sealer MB window sealing compound, Part number 001 989 31 20 made for these older cars or 3M glazing (can't find the number now will post later)

My car is a 116 as well.

I have the same problem with my 77 240D, it is dripping in the trunk. I see two joints in the rear rubber seal, about a millimeter wide right above where it drips, I guess that I will try the Auto Silicone Sealer, lets see what happens.

cool thanks......maybe the dealer will know what this is with a part number to show them. Last time I asked them they got a real dumb look on their face.

Never done a 116 but putting a little dishwashing detergent and water in a spray bottle and spritzing the metal and rubber before doing the rope trick makes it all slide together real nice. Dry rubber seals don't like to slide and will tear from the rope if you are not careful. Ask me how I know.... RT
