It's all about Delo...

...although I'll admit to considering switching to synthetic oil...I'm just scared of the leaks...

Benzcrusher 05-17-2004 11:43 PM

Rotella 15W40 with a Rilsone chaser..... and a fresh Mann filter for good measure.....

BobK 05-17-2004 11:47 PM

I have bought several used cars over the last 30 years and never had a leaker when they were switched over to Mobil 1. That includes '65 Ford Econoline 240 CI 6cyl @ 97,000 miles, '72 400 V8 Ford Torino @ 72,000 miles, '75 Old's 98 455 V8, @ 43,000 miles, '73 BMW R600 @ 53,000 miles, '83 MB 240D @ 143,500 miles. You will only develop a leak if you have a weak spot being temporarily sealed by sludge. I didn't mention anything under 40,000 miles because list is too long and includes several motorcycles besides the Beemer mentioned above.

I only went half way..... to Rotella Syn this change......I know not a true Syn but many of the benefits of a more highly refined oil are there.

No leaks yet but dont expect any either.

Havoline 20w-50
$1.20 something a quart.

Diablo-Diesel 05-18-2004 05:27 AM

howdy all,
Delco?? I've been very pleased using the 15-40 castrol :) I use it in both my diesels, and jeep.

82 300sd turbodiesel
85 F-250 diesel

langpfeife 05-18-2004 06:03 AM

Castrol 20-50, and it's not even "C" rated.

I'm thinking about having it analyzed tho, just for the hell of it. It's what reading other oil threads on this board has done to my head. :P

BAD!!

Joking aside, I'm not a die-hard supporter of any specific brand of oil (I routinely buy Delo, but I'm not militant about making others use it as well), but there's a reason for the "C" rating. Oils that do not have a "C" rating are not prepared to handle the extra soot that diesels naturally put in the oil (that also makes the oil turn dark so fast) from compression getting past the rings. Using a non-"C" rated oil means the oil will break down much faster and probably clog the oil filter up faster, and will certainly contribute to the inside of the crankcase getting dirty far quicker, and will likely result in a shorter engine life due to those factors.

I believe that it is safe to use a non-"C" rated oil in an emergency situation, but I would be sure to get the oil changed, with the proper oil poured in, after 500 miles.

Just my $.02...but I recommend in the strongest terms to switch to a "C" rated oil.

Chip, welcome aboard  "Delo" and 'Delco" are two different things; we all know that Delco is a subsidary of an inferior auto company ;), while Delo (which, I believe, stands for Diesel Engine Lube Oil) is the type of oil Chevron sells for diesels.

Thanks for the thoughtful post, I'm definately going to run Delo or Castrol RX (diesel rated) from now
on. AFAIK GTX used to have a diesel rating, so I was pretty shocked to discover that was no longer the
case. I'll let ya'all know the results of the analysis...the engine seems very clean, but I'm pretty
curious at this point to see how GTX has been faring in my diesel.

That makes sense...I don't remember if it was GTX, but the previous owner of my old van used Castol oil, and it had a "C" rating. I just had been in the habit of getting Delo (it comes in gallon containers, and is difficult to get the wrong stuff :)), so I continued with that...and I probably will keep with that until I'm finally convinced to go the synthetic route. :)

IMHO as long as there's a "C" rating and the viscosity matches your ambient temperature range, you should be good to go. :)

Happy to have been of some help

Come on everyone! Go with Mobil Delvac 1300. It's cheaper than Rotella, and most say it's the best non-synthetic Diesel oil.

Hatterasguy 05-18-2004 08:46 PM

I thought Delo was better than Mobil 1300? (stir stir stir:D)
