v8 300d

I have an "extra" 300d and an "extra" ford 5.0 and 5 speed.

Before I get far along, does anyone know what kind of beating the I.R.S. in this car is capable of taking?

How much of a beating can the IRS take while in my car?
I guess enough to keep them away after I break each of those fingers-one at a time.

Maybe when the boys are done making jokes (I think it's to cover up their fear of the great goverment panhandler) you will get some info. And then of course there are the purist that think putting an american engine in a Mercedes is just short of being a Commie.

I neither fear the Independent Rear Suppensions and I admire unusual projects. As a matter of fact Purist cover your eyes I have some rather extreme plans for my 81 SD that has a bad tranny and I have been sneaking parts off for my other SD.......

i say go for it!

word is that you will have to conver to a rack system (like tobias, badbenz, and myself), and of course you will have to make mounts and all of those fun things, run the two electrical systems, recalibrate the speedo...ect...

the rear end is stated to be pretty tuff / size wise inside about a ford 8.8...upgrade the rear flex disk to turbo quality and renew carrier bearing...youll be using a good old uni up front out of the T05...

as far as the IRS system - ours is BEEFY...OVERBUILT...
go to a local pontiac dealer and look at the GTO, the local chrysler dealer and the HEMI 300C, or your local forstore and a MUSTANG...then look at ours.

you can help it all out with lowering springs that are progressive wound from EUROCARPARTS.COM, and use the Bilstein hd shocks, although some say that more than 1" of a lowering and you need SPORT shocks...my HDs have given no problem in three years...
you may also want to check the rear subframe and diff mounts...mine were junk! HA! also no one carries rear swaybar bushings, you have to use 201 units...

badbenz.com reports no problems with his 383 coupe

and tobias here on the forum is running a 351 with his 190

you may want to really look into the tranny...and the fit in the tunnel, most run autos...we tried this winter to run a manual but as of yet no luck with the m5 r1 unit...(i have a sced 3.2 vulcan)

nevertheless you will need to make shifting links too...all the fun stuff, good luck with the radiator - word is that the MB unit is pretty good, i found a guy here local in Buffalo to make me an all aluminum crossflow unit custom to drop in the oem mounts...ill giv eyou the name if you need it, might be easier for him to make two while hes doing it...

he said itll hold 300hp all day long 24/7

well good luck, obviously you know how much work it is, or you wouldnt be asking the question / proposing the project!

also its pretty tight for running duals, were to put the mufflers if you are using like a set of 40 or 50 series...little things to consider...

Jake
ps...some research on the web will lead to a 5.0 powered ~450sl with good photos and write up....

There's a 240 with a 302 for sale in the Vancouver WA area for $850. It says it needs engine work though. Its in collectorcartraderonline.com.

$850.00 scares me...

that is no where near the cost of man hours to do this correct, or SAFE! let alone with the car...

i also can not take it serious because there are no photos of the engine bay or the work...

who would put the time needed to engineer, machine, fabricate, and finish this - and then only charge less than a dead 240d???

im lost
Jake

It is a dead 240. "needs engine work"

The posts I found concerning the 5.0 swap were in the 190.

I am thinking that I might avoid the steering problem in the 300d.
Although, I have not measured for that interference. I fully expect to have to modify or swap oil pans.

Where is the interference issur on the 190.
The gearbox, pitman, idler, or drag link?

Ford 5.0/5-speed combos in old European cars are pretty cool. Fast, extremely smooth, and nice to drive--in many cases, the best qualities of both the cars involved. Is your 5.0 fuel injected? Some of the wiring can be a PITA, but if you are good with diagrams it's not too big a deal.

Oh yeah, the Europeans DO overbuild their cars. I used my stock rearend and chassis (except some swaybars), and I'm convinced it's a much more fitting home for a big V-8 than the original Mustang was.

I love crazy combos, so this seems pretty tame to me. The fuel injected HO motors from '89-93 are great candidates for swaps. Reliable, powerful, and simple. I love mine. If I had a MB with a dead motor, I would consider a similar swap.

Good luck!

Makes me want to find a clean 240D stick with a bad motor just to do this.
