Injection pump woes...

Is it possible for an injection pump to be mounted incorrectly?

My SDL was leaking oil around the Ip and my indy decided to remove and replace the o-rings gaskets, etc....The car was still not running right according to him and he adjusted the ip timing and it ran like a scalded dog, although it was burning a lot of fuel, so he decided to adjust it again and some part of the injection pump broke, at which point he installed(for free) a rebuilt one he had at his shop.

Anyway, he now says that the pump is incorrectly mounted(the car is running rough and he can't get the timing right) and "HE" will have to remove and re-install. All other work was done by one of his mechanics.

I am not familiar with the workings of the injection pump, hence the question. I have mounted water pumps before, never one of these. I figured it was a simple removal and replacement.

None of this is costing me any money by the way, as the car has been in the shop for several weeks. The guy is my neighbor and he has been swamped with work. If he is guilty of anything, it's letting his flunky do the work without supervision perhaps.

Thanks

Yes, the start of delivery is controlled by the position of the pump relative to (I think) 15 ATDC on your 603 engine.

If your indy does not have the special service tool to set the timing properly its quite likely your engine is out of time.

This is actually the 2nd time I have taken my car to this particular guy, and on both occasions, when his subordinate/assistant does wqork on my diesel, the owner has had to rectify the problem. Vey frustrating, I haven't driven the car in 6 weeks.

Form what I understand, and maybe it's been all sales talk, by the time the IP cover plate seals and various o-rings start leaking, the pump needs serious attention. Besides new delivery valve seals, the individual [technical terms escape me] connections between the cylinder pumps and the rack have to be calibrated on a bench.

What exactly broke?

I've heard it can go on improperly but I have no idea how that can happen. I'm not exactly a surgeon and I got the IP off and on without incident.

I couldn't begin to tell you what broke, I just know he did it and is responsible, so I'm off the monetary hook. The worst things is I have to drive one of my spare vans which sucks up gas like Monica Lewinsky sucks ....you know what.

I do think the pumps on the 60X engines are not quite as robust as the 61X pumps. There seem to be more ways to break them as well.

I removed the pump and replaced all the seals on my OM602 engine and the pump now dry as a bone and working well. My car only had 115k on the clock, I agree with Sixto it seems like alot of these pumps need a trip back to the calibration for a checkup at 200-300K miles. The seals seem to fail every decade or so without regard for mileage.

Plantman,

You should have the injection pump (IP) checked on a test stand at a Diesel Injection shop. That's the only way to know if the IP is functioning properly. Even though the "new" IP is supposed to be a rebuilt one, there could still be something wrong with it if the engine does not run well with that IP installed.

Should this be done even thought it's been rebuilt? After thinking about it, it makes sense to spend a few more $$$, to make sure the rebuild is working properly.

I'll keep you guys posted.

Sounds like when the flunky mounted it he was off by a tooth on the timing chain. So there wouldn't be enough adjustment left to get it right. Yes, it can be improperly mounted.

That's what the owner of the shop said. Hopefully, he will do it this time and I can be on the road again soon.
