Is 6000$ too much for an 83 240D with 80k miles on it ?

The car has no rust....interior is perfect....it is manual and has great paint

6k too much ?

I would suspect it has the infamous slipping gear on the Odometer. Unless there is paper trail proving milages over the years I tend to not believe low milage claims.

As warned by the doctor, you should approach low mileage claims carefully, but there are indeed many low mileage cars around here and there.

I've never heard of the spur gear odometer problem showing up at such a low mileage. My first 240D never had the trouble and went to about 280,000. My second 240D started the problem at well over 300,000 miles, maybe more like 400,000. I could consult my logbook to know for sure.

I would not pay a high price for a "low mileage" car without not only having mileage proof or at least evidence, but also having complete records including service receipts, etc. Without them it just isn't a low mileage car. Even then, I would NEVER pay a premium price just because it is low mileage. What if the car was driven one mile to the office and one mile home every day? It would be low mileage, but the car would probably be more worn out than a high mileage, well cared for long distance traveler car.

My $0.02,

Listen up then, you're about to hear it. My 240D was showing 76,000 miles when I bought it a year ago and the gear was slipping.

Maybe age has more to do with the spur gear sticking than mileage.

Have a great day,

That's what I was thinking. Your cars never get a chance to age without piling on the miles.

If you think about it, it's a lot easier to fix a mechanical problem than, for example, replace the carpet. It might be easy to find a replacement seat, but how easy will it be to find one that matches the rest of the interior?

Second, how do you put 200,000 miles on a car without wearing out the seats and carpets? Anybody who can do that probably has the oil changed regularly.

Use your best judgement.

Hey wait a minute, the description is suspiciously like the one in your signature. Are you talking about selling or buying? It sounds a little high to me, but if the car has been garaged and is truly rust free, then you might be in the ballpark for NJ.

tscott,

That's what fools many people when buying a used MB. MB interior, chrome, paint, trim, etc. holds up EXTREMELY well. Many people see an old MB and they're used to looking at domestic cars and they say "wow, this car looks like new." In reality the car may be totally mechanically used up.

I have several old, very high mileage MB's around the place that still look extremely nice cosmetically, particularly in the interior.

Good luck,

I lived in Kearny a long time ago. I'm 38 now, and I lived there between 10 -14 years old.

In fact, we were one of the first hispanic(cuban) families to migrate over there from Newark. I did a lot a fighting in those days.

IT is now, but in the mid-late 70's I would get chased by 4-7 "crackers" who didn't want any "spics" in their town.

My last year in grammer school(lLincoln? on Kearny ave) was marred by at least a few brawls in front of the school.

One time, it was 1 on 5 until my mom showed up, then we kicked some ass.

My cousins still live there and they love it.

Thanks
