300TD revving up by itself....?

My engine is surging at idle when cold, and when it's warm it will revving up all by itself. I backed up on the idle adjustment all the way, and disconnected the trottle linkage. Still going up. At about 4000rpm I just shut it down with the stop handle, because it sounds like it wants to keep going even faster. The last owner took the car to a dieselshop where they replaced some gaskets in the dieselpump. And charged him $1000. They weren't able to fix the "idle hone".

Bkr,

What engine is it? A 603 or...?
Does it have a cruise control?
So give us some more information please...

Danny

617 engine

It's a 617, converted into a 83 230TE with manual transmission. No cruisecontrol, the turbo is a Garret. Has about 320k km on it.

Hmmm

Sounds like attempting to runaway.
Need more data.

This is kinda interesting here...

Is it a 617 converted to a gas engine? or a 280TE that had the gas engine replaced with a 617 Diesel?

Sorry, the car was originally a 230te, and the 617 diesel engine was put in a few years ago. The"idle hone" was there when I bought the car. The last owner had spent $1000 at a dieselshop about 3 years ago, where they replaced numerous parts in the dieselpump; returnvalves, capsules. The engine still surges at idle when cold, then runs good at normal temp, before slowly starting to revv up. The runaway can be controlled while driving, but the engine doesn't back down when without the load of the drivetrain. I have tried to adjust the trottle links, but even with the push rods disconnected, and idle adjuster back all the way, same thing happens.

I agree with Whunter -

sounds like it is starting to get an alternative source of fuel as it starts to warm up.

You can live with surge, but a runaway could be fatal. Start looking for a possible oil leak into the induction system.

just my $.02,

Wes

The possible:

Alternative source of fuel =
#1. Crank case vent tube feeding intake.
#2. Intake side turbo seal.
#3. Intake valve stem seals and guides.

As a conversion:
Do you have the correct dip stick?
Do you change your own oil?
How much oil goes in?
Have a great day.
