Likewise-

Bill of sale
Original window sticker
Port of entry inspection cert.
Pre Purchase inspection cert.
Cert. of registration for North America
Climate control instruction card
Cruise control instruction card
Becker radio instruction manual
1984 300 series Brochure
And every piece of paper related to the car since day one.

1st Owner bought it new at Mercedes-Benz of Manhattan, and relocated to San Diego a year later. even have records for 2 oil changes on its route from the east to west coast in 1985.

Original owners couldnt drive anymore due to age. Car sat in garage most of the time, owners used their 190D 2.5 for most runs when they could drive.I flew down to San Diego, picked up the car, and drove it home. I'll never forget walking out of the airport terminal to see it for the first time, waiting on the curbside in all its glory.

All vacuum locks_X__ Once I rebuilt the vacuum pump.

All dash and console bulbs_X Once I fixed the dimmer switch.

Cruise Control___ No such beast.

Climate Control___ All manual. Had to replace the heater control valve.

Air Conditioning___ Blows warm but still bubbles in the sight glass, I hope a new receiver dryer and a recharge will fix it.

Power Antenna____ Broken manual antenna.

OEM Radio___ Piece of junk, all speakers blown or just plain worn out.

Uncracked seatbelt buckles, Map Pockets and MakeUp mirrors_X_

Dash Guages_X_ Once I fixed the odometer, clock, cleaned the fuel sending unit, and tightened the ground clusters.

Sunroof___ Still very slow, needs attention.

No rust___ POR15'd and painted the area under the battery tray and some spots in the trunk but nothing major. Oh ya, under the trunk lid seal

Basically, a 25 year old car needed a new vacuum pump, new injectors, shut off valve, new radiator, new battery(PO ruined the new one he just put in), shift boot, odometer fix, fuel sending unit cleaning, clock fix.

Projects in the works:

Front crank seal.
Sunroof.
Brake job including front rotors, have not checked the back ones yet.
New trunk lid seal to deal with some rust in the trunk lid seal area.
New rear window seal.
All door seals. (Ouch!)
New hood pad insulator. (Old one crumbled upon touch)

Sounds like a ton of stuff, but I consider myself lucky. First owner had the car serviced at the dealer for the first 160K( got the stamped book) and lived in California and kept it garaged. The second owner was questionable but pretty sure basic maintence was kept up.(oil and such)

I got a damn fine 79 240D for next to nothing. Even if I put a couple of thousand in it, I bet I get another 100K out of it.

What is the weirdest repair you did?

.....Once I ripped the liner around the sunroof area when trying to bring plexiglass back from Home Depot. The next week at lunch hour I went out and hand sewed it with thread of the matching color, it took me a good 90 minutes...

...Once I waxed the inside of my engine compartment...

..Once I thought I could fix my clock the only function that doesnt work by replacing it with one from a 300SD

On a more serious note all 300Ds need front end work around 250K, I redid all my Ball Joints myself, as well as rebuild my front disc calipers, thus flushing the brake system..

Finally do you honk if you see another 123 or 300D on the Road? Out here in New Jersey, everyone honks all the time, so it wouldnt do much good...

hmmmm.. weirdest repair.

Well, I havent had a weird repair so to speak, but I did polish the cylinder head on my car, took 3 days. I did it in the winter while the car was in my garage keeping dry. Came out looking like a mirror.

Around here you can tell when people are into their cars or not. Alot of tired looking w123's are around, and they usually seem to be owners who have had them passed down, or have acquired them for some unknown reason, and arent really car people. but then you see a handful of w123's that are obviously enthusiasts cars (being all shiny and detailed, maye having a MBCA sticker, etc.) and then I usually wave, or If I see the car parked and I run into the owner I usually chat a little bit with them. For the most part theyre very happy to talk about their car, and I often times get people coming to me to talk about my car.
Ive even had people roll their windows down at a light and compliment me on my car. Its nice to see the appreciation people have.

Replaced leaking OEM oil filler cap with billet aluminum oil filler cap for VW, but I forgot that I used the soft wire brush on my Drimmel to remove the rust and crud from the fuel filler cap. It's amazing what you can do with a Drimmel Tool. I have been thinking about shinning up the valve cover with the Drimmel, but just can't quite bring myself to do that kind of thing to a real classy car as the 240D.

The power antenna can be fixed

Is the mast broken off? I remember a few years ago that was my case and I orderd a new one and replaced it. The iinnards had to be reassembled and fixed, it was a little tedious, like working on a watch, but I did it...

I just broke my antenna just the other day, and have ordered the replacement mast. Under 40 dollars US. Darn garage door didn't go up all the way and I didn't notice in time.
