I can see that it has been disconnected.. (On my '84 300D it is still connected). FYI its mounted forward and on top of the fiel filter and power steering pump... |

That is the cruise actuator.

On mine it is known as the Very Disfunctional Object;) .

Aha! Now it all becomes clear.. That would also explain why the cruise control is non-vunctional.
