How long should a motor mount last ?

I am getting a banging and it sounds like it is coming from the motor mount on the passanger side next to the wheel. It is possible for the mount to fail at only 178k miles ? It is a 1983 240D.

I think I will be changing it so I am just wondering if it is a pain in the a$$$ to change out all the mounts.....

Thanks

How long should they last? I would say 178 K miles or less. They are not difficult to change. Take extra care to make sure that the engine doesn't move after you lift it to get at the broken mounts. Very important because you WILL get your hands into dangerous locations. Use a good quality allen head socket wrench with a ball head to get at the bolts from underneath. You may need to pry the engine fore/aft or port/starboard to get the proper bolt allignment in the access holes.

Do the engine mounts for now if they are broken and have a look at the trans mount. It will likely be OK...they last somewhat longer.

Take care and be safe!

123 300D driver,

Do a search. This has been covered fairly well, including some pretty good hints at how to best get to certain fasteners. Driver's side is harder to get to than passenger (US driving configuration). On a 300D with a turbo the passenger side may be more difficult.

Have someone try starting the car while you watch what the engine is doing. The driver's side is the one that can go into tension, which, when it fails allows the engine to rock back and forth pretty hard. Banging on the passenger side may be intake and exhaust system related. Good luck, Jim

At 226K, mine are still original. Your mileage may vary...;)

So I am about to do the change..... What do I need exactly ?
I saw that there is some type of engine dampener ?

Can someone please list all the items I would need to change the eninge mounts ? how many ?

Thank You

Sinc eive owned my car ive replaced almost everything out of the desire to have everything in order and to have the car off on a fresh start, and the only things left on my 300DT are the engine, tansmission, and muffler mounts. My mechanic said they were well worn. The car shakes & rocks alot at idle, and it is to my understanding that it is because of the worn mounts. With that assumption, once all of the mounts Ive mentioned are replaced, it should relive the car of its rocking & vibration at idle, correct?
