Anyone know which speed sensor wire to tap for GPS
I've posted ?? on audio but no responses. I got the dash cluster out and there is a pod along side the speedo cable, fastened to the backside of the speedo, that has one green/yellow striped wire plugged into this pod and another double wire also plugged into the pod. I am not sure these may be speed sensor wires (connecting from Hall Effect sensor) hate to tap the wrong one and blow my GPS................Has anyone any knowledge about this and can tell me which wire, I'm lost

What are you trying to do with your GPS, on which vehicle?
The plug on the back of the speedo should be for the Cruise controller. As far as I know (not much reely) a GPS gets its positional data from satellites and they weren't available to us when MB made the 300D.

All GPS sat-nav's that I know of, installed into a motor vehicle require a hook-up to the vehicles speed sensor in order to function their duty. In this case, in the 124's, there is a module called a "Hall Effect" sensor. It works in conjuction with the cruise control (speed sensor) and also the climate control.
If the Hall sensor is not functioning, nor will your cruise control, or anything else it connects. The taillight stop lights have a current sensing device that if you have a problem back there, say with anything less than Mercedes Benz taillight bulbs, or bulbs that meet exact same values, the cruise control will not work. So I have read. Some excerpts on this issue can be found in the "E-Class Owner's Bible" Through the help of many who posted a resolve for my hunt in Audio and Tech Help, and diesel forum, thank you for your help. The green/yellow striped wire is the speed sensor wire. |

This is not true, as GPS is independant of the need for any collaboration with the vehicle for determining speed, etc. Using GPS is a great way of determining how much your speedo and odo are off, but the signal to determine this is derived from the sats, nothing from the vehicle.

The Nav unit he is installing (Harmon Kardon traffic Pro) does indeed require a speed signal. The NAV unit uses the speed signal for dead reckoning when the GPS signal is not available.

Units with dead reckoning usually require a reverse signal such as from the reverse lights. My sister-in-law's boyfriend (urban legend alert!) has the Harman Kardon unit in his car and I'm pretty sure it was working without a speed sensor input until he figured out the wiring.

Harman/Kardon Traffic-Pro (ie: Becker,) GPS-CD-AM-FM Stereo receivers by design, have to be connected to a speed sensor in order to navigate.......................................................................................
I am not guessing, or adding info that isn't real, I'm telling you fact, ver batem............the truth...........what's real................. The back-up light sensor is not completely nesessary for GPS operations. You are wrong, swizzle tooth!!!...................If you wish to investigate further contact: WWW.hktrafficpro.com Last edited by Sooty Taillight; 05-29-2004 at 02:26 AM. |

I guess that begs the question - what is the speed sensor signal when the car's not moving? The HK can plot a course while you're sitting in your driveway. I guess the point is that it won't track unless it confirms that the car is moving? Sixto 95 S420 87 300SDL |

I have had early and later versions of sat-nav that had to be programmed with GMT everytime you turned these 5 and 10 thoudend dollar units on! None ever needed to be wired to the ships speed analog, but they were not turning corners every hundred feet, or telling you what street you were on either.
This is new technology and with refined accuracy! |
