om617a help
Sorry to keep bugging you guys, but I have some more questions, and who better....
I have the engine running reliably in my unimog, although, not perfectly. It creates good power at higher rpm. It has what appears to be one cylinder that isn't firing properly. At about 1500 rpm there is a noteable thudding(not quite nailing sound) which I think turns into a buzz at 4000+ rpm(this might be flywheel balance). This weekend I will start by adjusting the valves and throwing some diesel injector cleaner in. I already adjusted the IP with home methods from here. Any way to determine if it's set right. It will run all day at 4000+ rpm on the flats without overheating 180'f max, on the hills it's a different story. Low speed high rpm 2000+ cfm electric fan can't keep up, has hit 230'f at which it dumped it's coolant. The diesel is basically hard mounted in the mog with no way of changing that reasonably. I need some suggestions for sound deadining material. This thing is loud and has a pretty good resonating low freq vibration at low rpm and buzz at high rpm. I'm running a K&N filter, I'll try the stock oil bath on it to see if what I'm hearing is intake noise. I'd appreciate any constructive input. PJL |

You may want to post this in the Unimog section - they obviously have more experience w/ your machine.
About the only thing I can help your with is timing. When you say you set the timing with home methods, do you mean you used the drip or bubble method, or something similar? You should know that your timing is right because you can see fuel coming out of the number 1 injector as you crank the engine by hand. For my turbodiesel its 24 degrees BTDC. If you've been messing around with the IP timing, are you certain that you've torqued the injector lines all the way down? Maybe a little air still is able to get into one injector; that certainly could cause the power loss in one cylinder you described.

Either way though his 617 turbo is a transplanted engine and THIS FORUM is best place for him to be on engine matters. More will pipe in for ya PJL. My Mog is so loud with my 617turbo , stack exahust, and tall snorkle w/Mann air filter, thus; Im can't even attempt to decipher your sounds with out hearing them myself. Also, my 300D is still not where I want it (I have a new nailing) so I dont yet know what it should sound like smooth. Im sure some will throw some more advice at you here in this forum.

Hey, thanks so far,
From what I've seen, there are very few om617a converted unimogs. If there is, there aren't many on any forums I've seen. Coach, how does your mog do with vibration, at highway speed there is a high frequency buzz through the steering wheel, and the shifter will rattle if I don't keep my hand on it. How does yours do for cooling on the hills? One more, how does yours do with wvo or biodiesel for power. From my work back to my home I climb about 2600 ft in 15 km, some areas are pretty steep. Will I regret using these alternates? TIA PJL |
