83 240D is killin me! Won't go over 40MPH
Hello, i know that my 240 is supposed to be slow and have gotten used to it, but as of late it will no longer hit 40MPH. I dont know if anyone has any ideas, but the car was working perfectly, i had the valves adjusted a few months ago and had everything checked out, but now whenever i take the car up any slope the car wont even hit 30MPH. i press on the gas all the way to the floor but the car just feels like its strugling. I lent the car to a friend before this happened and am worried he put regular gas instead of diesel in it, would that cause this kind of problem? Thank you

Change the fuel filters and you should be fine.

thank you for the suggestion. i did what you said and replace both fuel filters. i have never replaced a fuel filter before but it seemed easy enough. i only have one problem now, the car wont turn over. this may be a very stupid question, but could it be because i got air in the fuel line, and if so, do you know how I can get it out? Before i tried to start the car, i manually pumped the fuel as much as i could through the little plastic fuel filter, but there is still some air in there no matter how much i pump or try to turn the car over. the car did start at first but then died after about 30 sec, but i think it is still getting fuel, or is even flooded because it is pumpin out a good deal of smoke. thank you again.

Try taking the fuel filter back off and filling it to the top with diesel fuel. After a little cranking, this should do the trick.

which one, the big metal one, or the little plastic one?

He is speaking of the large metal one. After all the filters are attached, you need to utilize the hand pump until you feel good pressure. (Or at least that's what I did when I ran out of diesel in my SD)
Thanks David

Sorry, I just assumed you knew how to prime one of these systems. Like brightem said, remove the spin on filter and fill it will diesel and then spin in back on. Once it is on lossen the fuel lines at the injector end. Crank the car over (15-30 seconds at a time - you don't want to burn up the starter) with the pedal all the way to the floor. Stop and then pump the handle at the fuel pump for awhile. Repeat the cycle until you have fuel coming out of one or two of the loosened fuel lines at the injector. On a healthy engine you should be able to button the fuel delivery lines back up and it should start.
