Biocide in Fuel Now?...or After Long Drive......??
Hi,
I'm going to drive from San Francisco to Los Angeles. My mechanic said there was algea in the tank..He cleaned the screen, changed the fuel filter, and told me to get some sort of additive...a biocide, to get rid of the algae. I did lots of research, and contacted this company call "Power Service" in Texas...they sent me a product "Bio Kleen Diesel Fuel Biocide", and also suggested I get "Diesel Kleen + Cetane Boost", to add to the gas for performance. Neither of the products are very expensive....SOOOO, my mechanic told me to add the biocide before my trip to LA (about 450 miles), that the algae would just blow out.....I contacted my New mechanic down there, the famous Enrique I believe...HE said NO, don't add the biocide until i get there because it might really loosen all the algae and it might cause problems like blockage on the way down; To just take extra fuel filters and check them...The guy at Power Service, who really seemed to know what he was talking about (Brian Wilson)...also said the products are very good and will do the job and to wait till LA to add, for the same reasons. So now I am asking the advice of YOU all....Part of me wants to get the biocide in asap, but I don't want to risk problems on the way down...so what to do?? THanks, Lindajane |

Listen to Power Service guy and your Enrique.
I've used PS additives for a number of years, happy with them I am.

If possible it is nice to fill the tank, put in the biocide, let it sit a few days, then drain the fuel into a container through the output of the tank ( through the screen ) and then do the screen cleaning...
This way if any algae is on the walls of the tank and let go due to being killed you can get them out of the tank completely without risking being clogged on a trip... However, doing the screen cleaning before this trip should serve you fine... but I think a full tank and sitting with the biocide in the tank is the best way to kill the algae... I wait until I actually have evidence of algae return in the clear inline filter ... which has been at about 6 months and then 9 months from the 6 month incident.... one little tube , change out the clear inline filter a week later and wait until something shows up again... I think regular additives run up the cost of using the car too much.... After you get the algae out you might consider doing the Diesel Purge injector cleaning... I pulled my tank and power washed it... then put DP into the screw on filter and 1.5 cans into less than one gallon of fuel in the newly cleaned tank and ran it ... a lazy way to DP.... but I think it really made a difference in how smooth the engine runs ... Linda,
You shouldn't put gas in your Diesel or add Diesel Clean or Diesel Purge to the gas. Get it? P E H |
