I've sprung a leak, evaporator drain hose...
'80 300TD. I got the car 3 weeks ago, and when I replaced the drivers seat, I noticed the driver side floor was soaked. I dried out the carpet and floor area and just chalked it up to either leaking from rain or when seller washed it (door weatherstripping is bad). Well, since I have been working with my AC wiring the last few days, I noticed the carpet is soaked again on the drivers side. Real wet. Problem is, it hasn't rained since I've had it, and I haven't washed where the paint used to be. It is clear liquid, not antifreeze. I guess it must be condensation from when AC worked a couple of days ago. I'm attaching a picture of where I think it is coming from. In between dash and firewall, just above hump is a "nozzle" surrounded by foam coming out of a black housing. Could someone tell me what is going on, and what I need to do to correct this.
Thanks much! Jimmy |

You can buy the foam piece from an MB dealer pretty cheap.
Or, you can just fabricate a funnel out of a plastic bottle or something.

i used a high quality silicone sealant all around the foam tube, to form a "cast" around it , it is very easy to tear, so be careful if you are going to try this. my temporary fix is still holding six months now...........BILL

I have seen the same issue with the evap drain leaking. The way I resolved it was to cut the top 1/4 off of a plastic quart oil bottle and trim it to fit. The drain hole through the floor pan is an ideal size for the oil bottle neck to fit in and you can trim it where the evap case presses on it to keep it in the drain hole. Just go ahead and remove the existing piece that you have shown in the pic and insert the modified plastic bottle section. May have to remove/install it a time or two to get it right.

New Drain
Well, the fix concept was simple enough, and a Diet Dr. Pepper bottle sacrificed for the part, but the actual act of getting it the right size and contorting it into its space was amazingly challenging. Thanks again for the very useful info.

My '80 MB300D shows the same disintegration of the floor pan insulation shown in the photo in the pervious post.
Is there any way to rejuvenate this layer?

Recycled
for new members.
These foam hoses deteriorate, and become plugged or leak into the passenger compartment. I suggest replacing them with modern rubber or plastic hose. |

Answer
If the drain is plugged = constant serious winter window fogging.

I need to look into this on my 87. As soon as the fan comes on and its 35-50degrees outside, the windows instantly fog. If I engage the compressor they immediately defog, but as soon as I switch back to the "economy" mode it fogs up again. Also I occasionally hear flowing water in the morning in the dash, but have always shrugged it off as the coolant begining to flow into the heater core as she warms up. I am beggining to think it may be a build up of condensated water.
