American. European models would have a VIN as follows: WDB123123....

My 79 240D VIN is 123123 10 130797. I think they changed the VIN numbering in 80?

I always thought the easiest way to tell was by the bumpers. Then again, someone could have changed them.

Lots of items on these cars get changed over the years.
However, little differences that would not usually get changed like differential gear ratio, sometimes casting numbers on trans., a/c systems, headlight wiring, optional equipment not available in U.S., some trim packages, suspension, etc.
Some makes offer better brakes in europe.
Some makes offer different interior appointments in europe.

I found one grey-market car that only had the german written cruise handle and manual a/c left as its stand out.

Not true. The 123123 XX ## ###### is the Fahrgestell number and the last four numbers are the same as last four of you VIN, such as WDBAB23A7DB######.

In the maintenance booket these two numbers are on the last page.

Here is a pic of the rear from my '79 parts car. Apparently they made up US geared rears and just marked them in chalk to keep things straight at the factory....
You'll find lots of chalk and pen markings from the factory when you start stripping things down, the most elaborate I found was "Fritz von hier" :+)
