Sorry I got confused. Always leave the OE filter on there, the aftermarket ones like the Racors are best used to compliment the OE filter.

I've run heated Racors for many years on my BlueBird. I use the Racor 900fg for primary, 20micron, and a 2micron secondary for fuel polishing. The primary (racor) will get most everything, the secondary polishes the fuel for longer nozzle and pump life.
If you are away from home, you never know for sure the quality of fuel, can get some with water or bugs (algae) in it and then you're screwed. If I buy 300gallons of diesel I can't just dump it and start over, did this once and the barrels of fuel heated a shop in Michigan for a long time I suspect. Water in the fuel is bad, increases IP wear and can cause corrosion. Heavier than fuel so it settles to the bottom, you will usually suck straight water rather than a mix when you have enough water to reach the fuel pickup, so the engine stops. It doesn't hydro-lock, it would take a long time to fill the combustion chamber with fuel or water from the injectors. The MB diesel, could certainly benefit from a heated filter up here in the north. I use winter blend, and cloud-point depressant additives, but you can still end up clogging your filter with wax on a really cold day, heated filters are the truth, especially a nice Racor 500FG with the transparent bowl, heater and water sensor, then install a fuel pressure gauge downstream of the filters to indicate when they start to clog. Filter elements are in-stock at every West Marine I've been in. Overkill is good. |
