Worrisome noise
At highway speeds my 1984 300d makes a rotational noise (something rubbing on a rotating part). It is not particularly high pitched not a squeak or a howl. [I love trying to describe sounds using text, almost as much fun as trying to reproduce the sound vocally for the mechanic]. It seems to be in the rear right of the car. THe noise seems to start quietly gradually increasing over a few miles. It becomes more noticable going uphill and/or on right curves. If I go into a left curve or downhill the sound seems to go away. If I ease up on the accelerator the sound decreases but does not go away. I stop the car to look underneath I don't see anything rubbing. But when I start up again the sound is gone and doesn't come back for 150 to 200 miles, then it starts again.
Is there something about the weight shift uphill and to the right that would suggest that the rear springs are getting tired? I'm trying to figure out if the old girl is really sick or if she just wants some days off at the spa. Any help is appreciated. Schooner |
