I like mine a lot but I drive it year round, salt and all. Yes, it has more rust than I'd like, but I'm still gonna drive it, because I like it. Well, I don't like the front seats, but hopefully I can do something about that in 2005.

Madness...... takes it's toll

It must be madness, you decide. Bear in mind that I am an old(er) fart that has been a mechanic for the better part of 36 years with 14 years at Porsche/Ferrari dealerships and I owned Porschasports for 16 years.

Previous Mercedes:
1971 Euro 280SL 4speed stick; rode like a log wagen, 12 MPG. Great looking little beast and in perfect condition. It sold for $30,000 in 2000.
1989 300SEL auto; poor fuel economy and very little power. Needed valve seals every 15 to 20K. Some idiot stole it from Marina del Rey.
1989 500SEL auto; 12 MPG, it needed an endless supply of relays and flex disks. Traded it in.
1997 S500 auto; this car is fondly remembered as "the terrarium" since it had double glazed windows and the damn climate control never worked correctly. Many trips in winter with the sun roof wide open because the heater had run away.

Then, five years ago, one of my clients gave me his 1984 300D auto with 160,000 miles. Blue with a blue interior. Ugly little spud with it's steel wheels and hubcaps. It broke a ramp and spit the new chain at 200,000 miles so I took it off the road for a year. Rebuilt the engine and ALL the suspension as well as the AC system except for the condenser and evaporator. Went through the vacuum sytem too. New MFI pump and injectors. Everything works and it gets 22 MPG. New KKK set at 12 psi. Used a set of perfect 1995 Buick Riviera electric leather seats. Also did a few modifications that probably shouldn't be discussed

Now the stable consists of a 911 RSP; a 3.5 twin plug 930; a modified 934; a Chevy C-2500; and a fat old man like me still rides a modified GSXR 1100 and a ZX-10R w/turbo. But I spend 95% of my time in the old smudgepot.

I am not a tree hugger and I carefully choose the laws I want to violate, except gravity

I love the old diesels. Go figure, eh?

Wonder why you get such poor mileage? My colleague with the same car gets 28-30, I got 27 from my last tank in the SD.

Tirebiter, could you please post a picture of the seats? I'd really love to see that. I am serious about replacing the seats in my SD. Details, PLEASE!

I drive it like P.T. Barnum. Every act, an animal act. The right rear tire chirps just about every time it hits second gear. Freeway speed is usually 72 MPH unless no one is looking; then it's 80 to 90 MPH.

The owner of the shop where I work has a 1985 300CD with the earlier 1984 intake and exhaust. No trap oxy on it and no EGR. He gets 26 to 28 MPG.

His wife has a 1984 300D, like mine, and she gets 27 to 29 MPG.

Then again, I only get about 1,500 miles on a new rear tire on the GSXR and it averages 26 to 30 MPG.

Some people think I drive it too hard. I think I'll be mellow once I'm dead, but not until.

I will take pictures of the seats and will probably start a new thread on seat replacement.

I loved Mercedes diesels from the time I heard them purring down the street 20 years ago. That sound was unique to my ears. Call me crazy, but I loved that sound more than that from a V-8 with roller rockers. The ricemobiles that infest the streets here, I hate the sound of those with a passion. I was only 9-10 years old at the time. Fast forward to present time. I love my diesel. The ease of maintanance, power and economy give me even more reason to love these cars. I am probably like many other forum members in that I think the engine sounds almost musical.

On average, I do get only 23 MPG. Nothing mechanically wrong with the car. I simply drive it like I stole it. I leave people far behind at traffic lights. On the open roads I regularly see 70. I am trying to dispel the myth among the car fanatics that a Mercedes diesel is slow. They probably had the misfortune of being stuck behind someone who did not know how to operate this fine machine.

If money were no object, I would still own a W123 turbodiesel. My dream cars would be the new S400CDI or the BMW 740D. My mechanic said I have the diesel addiction, worst case he has ever seen. Quite unusual given my age. The usual Mercedes diesel driver in these parts is over 50 and the first owner of the car. I am the fourth owner and only 32 years old.

I prefer cars that have soul. That gutteral German soul. A car I can drive often and crave to be behind the wheel every waking moment of my life.

There are some cars that you never really get tired of. Its actually amazing!

Anybody who has known the M103, M119, OM603 know these cars fit the definition of which I speak.

The oldest I ever owned was my 99 E300. I don't care much for the older stuff, especially anythign with a carburator. I can understnad my 91 Firebird with the electronics way better than a carburator. I like the newer stuff.

I went to diesel because the wife was doing a lot of long distance trips and diesel would be a little easier on the gas mileage. Not hooked on it tho. I realize that gas has many advantages that diesel won't have and vice versa.

I like my diesel more than I could like any gasser. I suppose I could *be warm* to say a E300 or V8 or something But I'd still prefer the diesel, I am a true addict....I will keep my car forever, and hopefully many many others like it, to create a nice huge stable that freaks out neighbors. I am only 18 too Dieselin' it since I got my liscense. The sound, the smell.....the feel....I am permenantly addicted.

I've put about 8 miles on my first MB since I've owned it. Its off the road and when I need a fix I go out to the garage and open and close a door a few times. Brings a smile to my face every time....A wild guess at what I'll spend to get it where it can be a daily driver is ~3K US dollars. I'm at ~$350 in parts right now and havn't finished the cleaning up/prep work. Eageraly awaiting the Spring to clean this car and install my parts.

I like mine.....I am at the age where style and comfort trump speed and performance.............witness my recently acquired 300D and the pending sale of my rice rocket honda.

After 8 1/2 years with this car, I'm not bored. This year I want to tackle 3 reasonable things: Make the A/C work again, fix/stop the worst rust and replace the front seats with some beauties I just acquired from a 98 750iL. I bought the car to have a solid, safe quality car I could work on and keep for many years. So far, so good.

Diesels -

The 98 and 99 E300TD's are AWESOME. They have their quirks like all other years, but if you own one, you know what I'm talking about. If you don't own one, see Herb.

My first Diesel here, and I like it. My lifestyle suddenly take a slower pace, for the better.

I think my dream car is the Touareg V10 TDI 5.0L, which I'll wait for a couple more years to finance a used 2004 .
