W126
The second picture is of a W126. It could be an '88 but the W126 coupes covered a few model years. Older ones were 380SEC and newer were 560SEC.
Look up a couple of 560SEC pictures (on eBay or on the internet somewhere) and you'll see cars just like the one in your picture. Neal

I don't think they ever put a diesel in an SEC at least in this country. But if you could find one with a bad engine I cant see why it would be a hard coversion at all. In my opinion they are one of the most beautiful models MB ever made.one with a 617 engine would be a real treasure........

The proportions are near perfect ,rear window line is the best of any 2 door hardtot I can think of ,I belive it's the same as a 126 sedan but works real well on this 2 door.
I gotta think that a 617 turbo engine and tranny would bolt right in .Might have to use the diesel radiator , not sure if the fuel tanks fittings are the same but would bet they are similar . Maybe the transmission would be a different length. But it sure sound fesable.Autotrader.com would be a good place to start looking for one with a bad engine......... just checked autotrader.com there's an 84 380SEC with front damage for 500 but must be a misprint as it has SE or SEL grille. There's an 85 500 SEC with a new interior for 3400 and a 560 SEC in FL for 3500 says it's a 96 but photo is a 126 ........ William Rogers.......... Have an '83 300CD...
...and there's a nice article on the W123 body styles in the current Mercedes Enthusiast.
Shorter wheelbase, so has a different feel from sedan. Cost $35k when new. Some problems include lifter motors for the rear quarter windows which all seem to die, and the fact that ANY body / glass / or trim part for these cars will set you back plenty. Mine is rust-free, but has had a load of mechanical problems since I bought it (for way too much) three years ago. At least there are no computers to go up. Very low production, and I think maybe that's why Mercedes didn't bother to go in and fix stuff like the rear window lifters...maybe the most "collectable" W123 (see article cited above), but I wish I'd just found another sedan instead. If you can find a copy, Frank Barrett's Illustrated Mercedes-Benz Buyers Guide has a lot to say on the various coupes...sadly, it seems to have gone out of print. |
