300D 83 Water Temp Sensor

Can someone tell me where the water temp sensor is located? The car's an 83 300D OM617 engine. If the sensor is the sensor-like thing near the thermostat housing, how can one remove the connector without breaking it? My 83 sedan is sedately reading a little over eighty C but will occasionally go over 100C, today it hit 110C but the guage was jumping all over the place. I am planning to change the temp pickup then check the guage when I fix the dash lights. Figure the sensor and it's wiring aught to be checked too.
The fuel guage it flicking a little too, could all this be related? Does the fuel guage and temp guage share a ground???
Thanks Much.

Yes, a lot of this could be poor ground contacts in the instrument cluster. Would be a good first place to start checking, rather than replacing the sender.

Temp sending unit

I have an electrical connection on top of my therm. hsg, along with 2 unoccupied vacuum tabs. The Electrical connector is on the pin, but the wire (brown w/ black stripe) is broken and laying in the engine compartment. My temperature reading start at nothing and climbs as the car runs, usually just above 175F. Am I looking at the wrong area, since my reading shouldn't change if the wire is busted, right?

The water temp sensor is located at the driver's side of the engine near the glow plugs. I haven't a clue what the one near the thermostat is for (some say for the aux. fan to come on at certain temps, but grounding it doesn't start the aux. fan on my car and it doesn't show up in the wiring diagram!).

I think that it is for the aux. fans, or don't the fans come on with the pressure switch on the receiver drier?
Thanks
David
