Front Crankshaft Oil Seal Renewal - Stuck Hub

'91 350 SDL , 140K miles... front crankshaft oil seal is leaking and requires renewal. Easily removed the pulley and balancer but the hub only moves forward about 2/3 of the required distance before stopping. Continued tightening of the puller only results in the forward displacement of the crankshaft... the groove on the crank cut by the original seal becomes readily visible.

Haved lubed and reseated the hub and repeated the removal process several times but the hub only moves so far and then stops.

Any recommendations? Should the hub just be muscled off with the puller, without fear of out damage to the crank and rear seal because of the forward displacement of the crank?

The groove cut by the seal on the 601 is part of the hub. If you use a center screw puller, then you cannot move the crank, as you are pulling the hub against the crank.

Thanks for the clarification.

After multiple attempts, with the liberal use of Liquid Wrench, the hub finally came off. There was a good deal of corrosion on the inner surface of the hub.

you will need to address the worn seal groove on the hub.
check and see if a speedi sleeve is available for that size. if not then a new hub is needed...

jobah, I am inthe middle of renewing a 601 front crank seal. I have the center bolt out on the crank (used the starter) but I have read that reinstallation of the balancer is difficult. Can you elaborate on the procedure? Also, have you had to take the cooling fan off the front of the w/pump? I have that bolt out, but I am I suppose to use a puller on it?
Thanks
David

Not on the 60x. Difficulties are experienced with the 61x engine. When you renew the seal (which I just had to do a month ago when the pulley bolts sheared off the front hub), the hub just slides back on the crank (it can only go one way). The pulley attaches to the hub in only one way as well. The mechanism is quite different than the 61x which has a large balancer.

As for the fan, I am assuming that you have the electro-magnetic fan that was on the 84's only. Once you remove the screw you should be able to just pull it from the pump. You should not need a puller. Also, the screw is easier to remove when the belt is intacted, but it can be loosened even without the tension of the belt.
