300TD non-turbo, how fast is yours?

My 300TD was feeling a bit sluggish after a winter of short trips, it was probably crudded up inside. I decided that it would be italian tune-up time. The car is now a bit peppier. My current top speed stands at 85 mph, and I have verified this with a GPS. Don't know if this is good or not, it's the only non-turbo 300 that I have ever driven so I don't have anything else to compare it to.

To all 300TD non-turbo owners: What's your top speed?

Top Speed?

Don't really care what top speed is as getting tickets is like throwing money out the window, but I bet it takes a good 40 seconds to get up to 60mph. Like I've said before, my tractor can take it for the first 1/8 mile!

so far i've brought my 300TD (NA) to about 140KPH back in January (that was as much as i'd like to push it since i still had some things to sort out, mostly body repair etc).. now that the wagon is out of the shop, i havent had a chance to really drive it out...

at 140KPH, i feel like the engine is already screaming and i'm just worried that i might break something in the engine...

i bet it still could get past the 140 mark.. as soon as i get things straighthened out and could find a long enough road for the wagon to "accelerate".. ehehhee

edit part: i just saw your sig!.. we have the same year model!.. ehehhee

I've had mine up to 85, I really wasn't looking for a top speed, I just noticed it. Here in SC most stretches of Interstate are posted at 70MPH. You need to be doing at least 81MPH to make it worth while for the trooper to pull you over. So 80MPH is de rigueur...... Damn, I remember that stupid 55MPH speed limit nonsence and once thought 70MPH was "flying".

1985 300d non turbo

I have a 1985 300d non turbo. They only made 3700 of them. 80 mph is about it but 0 to 60 MPH it is not slow. I beat turbo models up to about 25 MPH it is quick off the line because it was made with a hoped up IP. I love the car but it is very difficult to get parts for.

I drove a 1984 300D Euro once, and getting on the freeway (foot all the way down until 65mph) was almost like doing the same thing on my turbocharged 300SD. It took about 15 seconds. So either it was a fast 300D, or my 300SD is slow. Although it's turbocharged, the fastest I've ever had the 300SD however is about 78mph (wow). I don't drive that fast in the city though (65mph), I don't have money to toss around for speeding tickets.

My 1979 300CD needs 14/15 seconds to get to 60-mph on a warm engine and my top speed was 95-mph, between LA and San Diego. It's my feeling that the engine runs at his best at 75/80-mph, very smooth and "silent".

Sometimes I wished I had a 280CE, 180HP sounds very appealing!

Never taken my '80 (N/A) over about 78mph.

Doesn't have much top end speed, but I can cruise at 68 mph with ease and that is just fine with me.

The car feels like it can climb the side of a mountain off the line...much better around town because of the LOW(!) gearing than an SD or the turbo models.

I clocked it this morning again: 10.5 seconds from 0 to 60-mph, not to bad.

Wow!!! I have never clocked my 0-60 time but I'm sure that it's not better than 15 sec.

That's quite a claim....

What were the conditions, and did you use GPS?

How far were you falling to get that speed?

120mph

I topped my TD turbo at 120mph. It was a slight decline, but relatively flat. sounded and felt effortless

Wow, I guess there are some cars that can outperform the "norm".

I can empathize.

See, when I posted on other boards my claims of 0-60 in sub 8 second times(from the seat of my pants), I was laughed off many MB boards. Since I got my mini DV camera, I've turned many of my enemies into friends. 300SDL, of course.

The 350SD is good for peeling out from a stop, but unfortunately bounces off the limiter after it hauls butt up to 115 mph(stay in it and it should pull past redline). My 350 has become "sensitive" lately. I have videos of it, but they're kind of boring(and LARGE in capacity). Problem with the 350, is that the engine sounds too much like a gas car when you prod it.

Sweet spots in the 350 are like the 300's. Anything after 100 mph and they GO! Let off the accelerator, then press it to the floor BANG you feel the torque, the turbo kicks in under a second and off you go until your limiter breaks.

Oh and, btw, higher temp combustion can cause your diesel to become hotter and pull past redline if you stay in it long enough. Because a diesel runs better when its hot, redline is determined by how fast the combustion process can work. Unfortunately I don't usually stay in it that long to find out HOW far I can go. But the only way I GET to 5450-5500 rpms on my SDL is by getting a little over 100 centigrade. If I am at the normal 82, maybe 5250 - 5300 rpm.

350's are superior to 300's. Except their engines fail prematurely, and they have relatively short gearing(they weren't made for 120 - 130 mph autbahn cruising).

Run 'em hot, and run 'em wild.
