Here I go again with my slightly off topic diesel finds...
Well here I go again. I found another oddball diesel on eBay today and since I've never ever heard of one ever being available I thought I should post something about it. Figuring since it has a Mazda diesel engine it might not be such a bad thing. Give it a look and follow up with your comments. I thought since its a diesel it would be a liitle more appreciated under our diesel section than the open forum.

I know the Izusu PUP diesels were strong (for the size) and had long lives. But who wants to drive that car, diesel or not?

Odd Diesel found in Littleton!

At Colorado Auto & parts there is a UPS truck styled 1981 Iveco truck powered by a Deutz Air Cooled Diesel Engine, Model No. F5L912, N/A 5 cyl, indirect injection, and rated for 100 hp.
They only want $75 for the engine and $125 for the trans. The only problem with the truck was a fairly minor cab fire isolated from the engine. If I had the space to store it, it would be mine by now. (The picture is not of the actual engine, just an example.) |
I know these engines. They're usually used as powerplants for mobile hydraulic equipment. They're great engines and $75 is a steal for one that is running.
|
I ran Deutz engines when I worked off shore Iran during the Iran/Iraq war in the late '80's. I ran inline 6 cyl. and a couple of either 10 or 12 cyl. engines, I can't remember which. I used them to run hydraulic pump units to pump off war damaged super tankers. I was out there for 3 1/2 years off and on (mostly on) and never had a failure. These engines ran full speed 27 hrs. a day 9 days a week for weeks and weeks on end. At night the exhaust manifolds were so hot that they were almost transparent. This doesn't mean that your 5 cyl. is any good but I had good success with the ones that I used.

Am I alone in a little frustation at poor details of ebay cars?
I mean, for a 1986 with 5300 miles!, it seems a little interesting that struts were done 10,000 miles ago..... Seems it would be hard to enjoy something like that after cruizin a MBZ ;) |
I guess Fords had odometers that would only go up to 99,999.9 miles and that was probably more than enough for most of them. This one is probably an exception since it has a non-Ford engine in it. No surprise on the struts, probably typical Ford parts.

And that's why Mercedes always dominated the diesel car market...

And yes, Ford odometers only went up to 99,999 miles until the early to mid '90's, I believe... |
"Mileage is in excess of its mechanical limits."
Seems like an interesting toy, provided you don't need to rebuild the engine. Once again, you will be begging for parts at the Ford/Mazda dealer. I looked at one of these about ten years ago that looked like it had cooling system problems. At least no crushed velour on this one. As I recall, the engine is well designed (in theory) as it has timing gears. I have a book published in the '80s that has all these "gems" and can fax you appropriate pages if you wish. I suppose if you can get it cheap and can make it last awhile it could be worth it. I know of an '84 Toyota Corolla diesel stick down here in Florida ( with 250K miles) for sale for $450 if you're interested Rick also a lover of unloved, unwanted , unusual diesels |
damn........I would buy that just to have it......but then what would I do with it???????????????????
Would just upset my wife even more. I mean the Duetz engine, not the Tempo........I wouldn't take that unless it was free and running great. |
Buy the Corolla!
I've driven the Escort and Topaz powered by Mazda and the Toyota diesel is far superior. If memory serves me right, the Mazda diesel can develop head problems (I saw one with a weld) and then there's the issue of the car that's around it.
A gas Corolla can make 250K, so a diesel is surely going to keep on clattering past that. In addition, the fit of the car will hold past that of Ford products any day. My .02 Rick |
Rick-
I probably would have except it's front wheel drive and the guy who has it doesn't seem like he maintained it well. other Rick |
