300td
Hi,
I've got a chance to pick up a '79 300TD metallic brown/tan for "asking $400.00". It runs and drives but needs a rear hydro-shock repair as well as general fix up and major detailing. the front seat MB-Tex is perfect except the pads and springs are shot. The paint is bad but the body is straight. Is it worth buying it? Or should it go to the dismantler? Steve |

You don't say how many miles it has. But anyway, if it really has no rust, I say buy it.

Steve,
Don't know what part of the country you're in, but the car sounds like not worth fixing unless you are just looking for something to do. By the time you dump a bunch of time and money into it you will still have an old naturally aspirated engine wagon that needs paint. I would only buy that car if I needed a beater to commute in. If you look, you can find a nice turbo wagon for a little more money, but you will have something. I suggest an 83 and up, because of all the upgrades that started in 83. Good luck, Peter

Steve, do look into the hydraulic rear suspension stuff thats on here (do some searches...) I dont know enough to be conclusive, but I seem to remember more than a couple guys that need to put loads of money into self-leveling suspension repair (pressure spheres??, hydraulic pump on rear end of valve cover ? hydraulic lines that leak ? I forget.). But for $400, if the body is rust-free, its tough to go wrong (you can always put better components in a soldi body.) -John

Didn't someone post something about using tractor oil of some sort in the suspension hydraulics? He said it got it working fine almost for free. I sure wish there was a way to toss all that hydraulic stuff--I hate having to worry about it when I am looking at a car to buy.
That said, I looked at a car with not so good paint and 230k that was an 82 300TD a few weeks ago, and it was fairly nice. That owner wanted about 10 times as much as your guy is asking, so I'd say go for it and don't worry about making it be perfect. |

That was R Leo who used hydraulic fluid from Tractor Supply. He's gone to Australia for 3 weeks right now.
