Non-diesel related help needed.....

I need you gearheads!!! This is not diesel related but automotive. I posted this 2X at the Subaru site and nobody seems to reply. They are no help there. What do you guys think about the diagnoses? Vehicle is '86 Subaru Brat (150,000 miles)

Well, I decided not to get rid of my dad's Brat. After thinking about it I just couldn't do it. I haven't been fooling with Soobs for quite a while so I need advice. Here it goes. He overheated it a while back and upon investigating I found his radiator was 1/2 gone. I put in a new radiator, water pump and a few hoses. A while after that he came back and said it would not idle properly. I think the damage was done. Warped head or blown head gasket? I tried to adjust the throttle cable, that wasn't it. I replaced the cap, rotor, plugs and wires and that wasn't it. I fooled with the idle screw and now it will idle but rough. It starts great, idles good with choke on. Soon as it warms and you hit the throttle to shut off choke it dies. I pulled the motor tonight and I am pondering on what to do next. Should I buy a headset from E-bay and pull the heads, check them and reinstall? Should I spend the time and look for another motor?

Sounds more like a carb problem to me (or does this have EFI?). I would think you'd be getting water in oil or oil in water if the head was cracked or warped. Might get the compression specs and test that too before you go too far. From what I've heard these are pretty indestructable cars...errr, trucks.

I had a cracked head on an Isuzu that cause over heating. The over heating also cause some warpage, which didn't matter since the head was no longer salvagable. No water in the oil and no over heating feedback via the temp gauge. Aluminum heads warp easily and I'm betting this engine has an aluminum head. Chances are the head is warped and needs to be trued. One word of caution, it it got too hot the block could also be toast.

It has a carb. I thought that it was the culprit at first also. But the choke worked so well and the car ran fine once you got going. I sprayed the hell out of it with cleaner and same thing. It does have aluminum heads and block, that is why I am thinking head warpage. The motor is out but I guess I can still check the compression as long as I can turn the engine over?
