240d hostility

Today I was accelerating, floored to the dots off a stoplight on a 55mph road and I was tailgated and flipped off by the driver behind me in some Honda POS. This is probably the 4th time it’s happened (all in CO, that’s another thing I’ve never been flipped off driving in CA, only by these hostile CO people). People will slow down to let me in as I’m trying to gain speed to merge onto a road and then honk at me because I’m going slow, I mean…is there a bumper sticker that says like “Chill out, I’m flooring it!”
I was wondering if anyone else gets this? At sea level the 240d is faster so maybe it’s just not as much of an issue but up here at 5,300 feet it’s just bad news. I usually try and stay in the right lane all the time and TRY to be courteous, but that can’t always happen. Also, I drive a bus, so I’m used to going slow and pissing people off, but when I’m pedal to the metal and get flipped off, I get mad. I tried to get the guy to pull over so I could murder him. Anyway, does anyone else have this problem or is it just me? Maybe it’s cause I have CA plates in CO.
-Nate

I think we all have that problem.

I've got about 2 1/2 times the hp that the 240 has. No matter. When entering a highway entrance ramp and using a fair amount of power, the dork behind has to immediately merge into the right lane and pass me while I am still on the entrance ramp. Of course, he has the gasser to the firewall and you can just listen to that engine scream as he passes.

I have figured out the problem however. These people have come to realize that the time spent at the next red light does not count in the overall trip time. They get that time deducted at the end of the trip.

Brain I have to say now I find myself driving more like you! I will let it shift a tick before 2k rpm and if their is a red light in front of me I just take my foot out of it and idle up to the light. I find people will blow past me then slam on their brakes. Usually as the light turns green I am still moving and just push the pedal and bring my speed back up. It is a very smooth way to drive and I usually end up passing the guy who just blew past me to wait at the light.
If anyone flips you off CannonBall, thats what the sunroof is for! Just stick your finger up threw so they get a good view. You could also pick up some of those orange cones that line the streets and throw one of those out of the sunroof.

Hattie, I'm proud of you. That is the way to drive that SDL. Especially around town. Now, I'll run it at 75 mph on I-91 when traffic allows, but, pushing it to the next red light in the city makes absolutely no sense.

With regard to flipping them off through the sunroof and throwing orange cones at them, well, maybe when I was your age................not anymore.
I am concerned that one of them will have a 9mm in the car and that he just might use it if he gets too agitated. I keep a canister of pepper spray next to me at all times, just in case................Not a benefit against a 9mm, unfortunately

I'm just kidding, I have never thrown a cone at someone. I have stuck it out of the sunroof so it looks like it is sitting on my roof. You get some funny looks with a cone on your roof! I know what you mean their are some crazy people out their. That is why I am considering getting my concealed carry permit in a few years, you have to be 21 I think in CT. I would never start anything but if someone decides they are going to shot me because I cut them off ect... I would prefer to have a .45cal H&K to change their mind. It is sad that we have to think about things like that these days.

Good taste in handguns, including cal. Tad expensive, but you get what you pay for there. I might add always stick the gun barrel outside the car, if you want to be able to hear your tunes again. DON'T ASK.

Long story, but surfice to say that a .357 Colt King Cobra was loud in the cab of my truck when the fool I had tried to pass would not let me pass or even drop back in behind. On coming semi truck was flashing his lights. He was laughing and giving me the finger, should have seen the looks on his face when I pulled the Colt up and fired. He saw it in time and hit brakes and swerved of road into the swamp. I watched him in my mirrors climb out and get up on roof of the car. I was driving a little Datsun truck towing a 15' boat. Almost forgot, the semi just kept on going and did not stop and the gun was loaded with snake shot ammo.

That's fantastic! I shudder to think what would have happened if you did not have the .357 with you.

Here in NY it is virtually impossible to have a full carry permit for a handgun, so, I am not able to have such confidence at all times. Furthermore, here in NY, if you should ever have to use the gun, you can absolutely be sure that you will be arrested for it. The only possible exception is that the dork also had a gun pointed at you. In the circumstance you described, had you hit the dork, New York State would provide you with three square meals for a very long time. Certainly different than Texas, unfortunately.

I would hazard a guess that the CA plates are a large part of it. You have 2 middle fingers don't you? Recommend their liberal use in these situations. RT

Well, I should take my glock 23 and carry it, when that happens I could move it from it's legal visible location under my arm rest to a more legal more obvious location on the dash...

ahh, man I'm still peeved about this, that's so annoying.

If you have a concealed carry permit, you also should know that using the weapon or displaying the weapon in a confrontational manner is not the best thing to do. That's a really quick way to get the permit revoked (if the state you are in even allows a carry permit). My personal choice is a Ruger 357 magnum. Yes, I'll unholster it, but only if I'm threatened.

Regarding the "ricers" or other impatient idiots that are giving you a hard time - "illigitimy non-carborundum".

just my $.02,

Wes

Living here in Colorado I know exactly what you mean. The only real solution is an aftermarket turbo. The NA is a dog but the turbo screams at this altitude.
In th elate 70's I was hitchhiking the shuttle on a Mattawa River canoe trip in Ontario. A young guy in an old 50's Volvo picked me up. It was ratty enough that you had to hook the seatbelt thru the door handle and latch the belt to hold the door shut. Between the front seats he had a pump oil can with a hose going up under the dash. I asked him what it was. He replied, "Proximity Regulator." I pondered for a while about such a device. I finally asked him, "What does it do?" He said, "Watch this." He slowed down until someone started tailgaiting. He then gave the can a couple of pumps and a big cloud of blue smoke emerged from the tailpipe. He had the hose directly plumbed into either the intake or the exhaust manifold and he used it to give obnoxious drivers a good dose of smelly oil smoke. Very creative.
