80 240d ?s (possible purchase)

have a chance to get on for aprox $500 the car starts but it wont maintain idle and wont drive off of idle (what idle it does have) i have to play with pedal to keep running. owner says its a vac leak i dont know much about diesel but want to get into them (gas crunch) i know some about them but not all i need to know to dive into this car. from what im able to do with it the tranny shifts good into rev, drive and it did sift into 3rd when trying to drive it.

the body is straight but with a right qtr panel needing work(more than just some) the only rust on the car from the once over seems to be only in the driver door jamb fwd and a little on the bottom. int is consistant with the age and some neglect(what you think a $500 car would be ) undercarrage is normal w/ no noticeable bottom outs and rustproof coating is intact.

the owner says there no title but the bill of sale should be fine for the tag office ( the owner is salvage yard owner) says that because its and 80 model the bill of sale should suffice i'll have to cal the tag office to get the skinny

the car is going to be the project for a SVO/WVO conversion and maybe a turbo kit (the latter is still under question)

any advise from you guys would be appreciated thanks

Turbo upgrade: not possible, the engine was not designed for it.

As for the idle, could be many things: fouled injectors, bad fuel, plugged filters, low compression, badly adjusted valves to name a few. How many miles on the car?

I would definitely run a compression test on it before even considering buying it. A 500$ project can cost a lot more than a decent 2000$ car. If in doubt, keep looking around for another one.

A turbo will bolt right on to your 240 engine....
zoom, zoom..... BOOM, CRACKLE, CLUNK, SOUND OF PISTONS MELTING....... LOL

Actually a turbo upgrade is possible...as they ship them to India for some types of vehicles....
but it would take a LOT of changing... you need the turbo oil squirters, the oil annular cooling ring pistons, and better bearings...
The 240 engine is just the 300 with one piston cut off the back end... ( plus the other stuff I mentioned inside)....
