BTW, why do you recommend staying away from the 60x diesels? I consider not having to adjust the valves every 15K miles for the price of one head replacement worth the investment.
Yeah, that's just it, the "pop can head". No good.

Poor thing,

You can't do much to prevent the guy behind you from totaling your mechanical pride and joy.

Yeah it does look like a total loss. I'm afraid all it looks like its good for is parts. I couldn't imagine that it could be fixed too easily.

There's one in my back yard right now with 346K miles on the original "pop can head".

And a few weeks ago I rode in a 350SD with 250K or so on the original engine, nary a bent rod in site..

Go figure..

Amen.

That said, '85 is the last year for the OM617 cast-iron engine, and that car certainly looks like an '81-'85, not to mention the ad saying that it's a cast-iron engine. I assume that the "1995" was a typo.

Offhand, looks like a good car to me...and, while you could find a decent car for $1000 if you get lucky, for a good condition 126, $3000 isn't too bad.

Define nice.

Any car that you find of this vintage for $1000.00 will need plenty of work, depending on your idea of nice.

No rust? Lowmiles? Working AC? Good interior? Suspension tight?

Show me one like that for $1000.00 and I'll jump on a plane.

I am sure, if one were patient enough, a decent car that someone wants to get rid of, could be had for 1k, but you'd have to be lucky.

Perhaps our fellow member Botnst, will be the lucky guy.

Good 300SD's in my area seem to go for $3k-$5k. I'm sure you can get a nice one for $1k if your lucky or in the right place at the right time.

Nice 240D's are going for $3K to $5K in my area and I'm not even in a rust belt.
