slow movin' ;hard shiftin'

just got my first mb. 82 300 sd, 244000mi. car had been impounded for about 3 years and needed a lot of cleaning. runs good but has ,what seems to me, low power up to about 10 or 15 mph when the turbo comes in. seems worse when its cold. also has a very hard 1-2 shift , and the cruise surges. any advice would be appreciated. thanks, tom

have someone push the pedal while you watch the linkages. check to see if they are being fully pulled pack when full throttle. this was the problem on mine. does seem like your not getting first gear? as for the hard shifts it could be vacuum related. do you have a mighty-vac?

Tom,

Are you sure you're not in my car...they sound the same.

My car is a dog off the line and even when the turbo kicks in, it's still not as hot as some of the others I have driven.

I'm still working on replacing all the bad hoses and vacuum lines under the hood, cleaning out the Banjo Bolt and line on the back of the intake, etc.

I still need to do fuel filters and diesel purge.

Post your results of whatever you do, maybe it will help another someone like me.....

The banjo bolt Tom was talking about is on the back of the intake manifold next to the firewall on the drivers side. There is a vacuum going from the banjo bolt up to a valve on the firewall. My banjo bolt was completely clogged. When I cleaned the banjo bolt out it made a big difference in power.

My car is still a dog off of the line though.

I'm sorry the banjo bolt is located on the intake on the passenger side of the engine.

found a broken 3/2 valve that dumped all vac to the modulator as soon as throttle was opened. since this appears to only control the egr i pluged the supply line to it and that restored variable vac to the trans modulator. shifting better but still has only 2in vac to the modulator at 3/4 throttle. has12 at idle. main vac is 18. may need a bleed valve or modulator adj. is the line that comes off the side of the bleed valve a vent? has no vac. there ever, and niether valve or line will hold vac. tom.

increased vac to modulator by adj.valve on inj.pump till i got a good shift, very sensitive adj., use a gauge. still a little to firm on 1-2, but when i go more it flares on 2-3shift.
to help power i adj the alda ccw 2 turns and cleaned out the line from it to the overboost protection valve and the manifold . the o.b.p. valve was plugged up and also was not working prior to cleaning. i have 10 pounds boost . car isn't fast but it will at least get out of its own way now. tom

bowden cable

i adjusted the bowden (trans. to throttle ) cable to change the shift timing. it seemed to wind up to far before it would shift. after i did this i had to re adjust the vacuum because it would flare between shifts vacuum is almost back to where i started at. fwiw i would suggest that this cable should be adj. first . does any one know if m.b. has a procedure or order for adj. this thing? not a good experience, not a bad experience , just an experience....... tom

Adjusting the Bowden Cable and then adjusting the modulator seems to be the logical sequence.

The other day my transmission started flaring from 2-3 and from 3-4. I discovered that it was 2 quarts low on transmission fluid. It just developed a fairly steady leak on the passenger's side of the transmission that I need to get fixed.
