87 300D Front end rebuild--Why do my backing plates now scrape the tires?

I have completed the rebuild of the Front End of my 87 300D. i replaced the struts, bushings, and ball joints and eccentric bolts. I adjusted the eccentric bolts as best as I could, but amazingly enough there is no documenation on how to adjust them...I just tried to match the previous positions by the scrapes/marks on their mounting position. However I do know that a 5 degree or even 2 degree mistake can really change your alignment!

Anyway my Backing Plates behind my Brake Discs now scrape the tires. The sound is really disgusting. For a while I thought it was the rust that had accumulated on the Discs during rebuild...it ddint go away after a 1/2 mile and I took a look..embarassingly, I noted that my backing plates are scoring the insides of my tire rims..

Is this because of anything I did?
How do I stop it?
Is it as I suspect eccentric bolt adjustment?

You mean that they're scraping the _wheels_??

not the tires, don't you. I had this happen on my '85 300TD when one of our certified Virginia State auto safety inspectors handled a rear wheel so roughly while removing it that he bent the backing plate several inches out of shape. I don't see how it could have anything to do with the eccentric bolt, but maybe I'm misinterpreting your whole problem.

Maybe you bent the backing plates. Did you remove them when cleaning things up? Maybe you put them on crooked.

I thought the Eccentric Bolts

might have radically altered the Tire to Control Arm relationship, Boy am I dumb. Even if the control arms had shifted position, the Backing Plates attach to spindles. You are right, this has absolutel Nothing to do with the Control Arms

Maybe they're on the wrong sides and thus backwards?
