You know, it's not like the M-B engineers haven't been working on this problem for about a century now.....

As far as the diesel vehicles sent to the states, I believe that Mercedes engineers have been working on dependable daily driven vehicles if I'm not mistaken.

psfred, thanks for the run down! I wish there was a sticky thread on just what you said. When I first started to investigate the Mercedes OM motors, it took me forever to find half of that info! That's why I summerized the other info, just so this topic wouldn't have to be repeated for newbies like me!

Turbos have oil jets, non turbos don't, I believe. 606 and 607s are DOHC engines rather than SOHC, with the injection port in the center. Rods are common on all engines, I believe. Certainly the crank throw is the same.

There is no OM607 that I know of. The OM604/605/606 are mechanical-injection 4/5/6 cylinder DOHC engines. (Only the 606 was imported to the USA). The OM612 is a 5-cyl CDI, the 613 is a 6-cyl CDI. The OM628 is the 4.0L V8 CDI used in the S400. The OM646/647/648 are the latest 4/5/6-cyl CDI engines. The new 2005 W211 E320 CDI has the OM648, I believe. All the CDI's are DOHC. Of all the DOHC engines, only the 606 and 648 have made it to the USA. (?)

I am not sure if this would work but i have heard that you could take a 6cylinder 3.0litre and put the 3.5 litre head on it out of a 350sdl and lower the compression... I am not sure if this would work but if anybody does know i would be very interrested

The heads are the same for both 3.0 and 3.5L engines. The compression ratio is not less with the 3.5 head. It's a common repair to install a used 3.5L head in place of the weaker, crack-prone 3.0L heads when they fail....

Rereading this thread is entertaining.

Especially in lieu of the talented Finnish 603 masters pumping out 400 + hp with their diesels.

And as to the issue of longevity....Well I think as long as the EGT's are normal, the engine has oil that is clean, the car should last as long as you'd want to own it(as long as any MB diesel). The two things that wear down an engine are heat and friction, after all.

From what I've learned from these Finlandians, the 60x engines have some serious potential, indeed!

Anything done on a SOHC can be applied to a DOHC 60x, which is neat. The DOHC requires you to program the settings in and can be quirky, but the SOHC allows you to screw everything up, unintentionally, yourself!

Next up......61x, 60x engines vs 64x engines.
