Rear axle repair kit installation

My MB service manual shows an expensive looking tool for cutting the the protective sleeve apart and a secnd tool for closing the joint on the repair kit sleeves. My question is. Can this job be done without special MB tools. The manual also gives a press pressure, to remove the spider joint hub from the axle shaft, of 5000n. What is that in psi.
What good is a low price on a kit if it can't be installed without a thousand dollars worth of MB special tools.
Thanks

Did you put a turbo on a 240 engine ? If yes, did you change to turbo pistons and oil squirters ?

John,

A newton (n) is the metric unit of weight or force. The equivalant unit in the English system is the pound. The metric equivalent of PSI is the Pascal.

Sorry, I can't find a newton to pounds conversion table. Maybe someone else here knows what the conversion factor is.

According to my conversion table: 1 Newton X .2248 = 1 Pound-force.
Good Luck!

To answer the real question, you need the tools to do the job. Put in new, rebuilts, or used ones with good looking boots.

No, nothing was changed except the manifold and exhaust system . Ran the car for 17 years with no problems because the 240 engine is a tractor engine and begs for a boost. I could wip my wife's 300 d turbo. Garret has a kit now for a ford diesel. the turbo looks identical to the 240 turbo. They have a web site with good photos of the equipment.

Yes, this job can be done without special MB tools. A press will be required(Local machine shop). Boostnbenz has done 'em and I have also. Not that bad but requires some ingenuity. I did mine a little differently than Boostn', but he has excellent instructions posted, I don't.

My axles had about 350K on them...fresh grease/oil ,paint, new boots and swapped sides on the car when I put them back to even out the wear. Works great, try it.
