Yes, they really do exist...<commentary>

Earlier this week, I was stopping off at the Interstate Battery hut and noticed another 123 parked nearby. A lapis blue sedan...very clean-looking too.

While in the the battery store, an elderly gent strolls in to buy something and I realize as I'm walking out the door that the lapis sedan is now parked in front of Interstate and old fella must be the driver.

I looked it over and it was clean! Actually, pristine might be a better term to describe the condition of this particular 240D. I went back in, introduced myself, praised him on his choice in automobiles and asked, "what year and how many miles?" "It's a 1980 and has right at 89,000 miles on it." he replied.

3700 miles/year. Geez.

There are a lot of older person owned MBs in my neighborhood, especially this one perfect, white 240, and a silver one thats a gasser, with the over and under headlights? Really well taken care of and still driving around the hood every day.

I see a few 123s that are clearly daily drivers with LOTS of miles on them. Then I see some that are absolutely perfect as you described that 240 to be. At the same time I love seeing a perfect old mercedes I also hate it cause it makes mine seem so 'blemished' But still for an '84 that's been a daily short commute driver, up until I owned it, it is a clean little car.

I came home last week and noticed an Orient Red 240D (palomino interior) double-parked in front of my local Italian Social Club (I live in Hoboken, NJ). It was immaculate, looked like it just drove off the showroom floor - no rust, no dents, no dings, etc. The vanity plates read JOEYB so I stuck my head in the social club and asked for him. A few minutes later, this older gentlemen comes out and we strike up a conversation. It's a garage-kept 1976 with 73,000 miles. You do the math on miles-per-year...

I ended up swapping business cards with Joe, telling him, "If you ever think of selling it, please call me."

Fingers crossed,

Diesel Fitter

It wasn't a M-B, but I came across a 1950 Cadillac 4-door sedan several years ago that was coming up on only 13,000 miles. It was original and the owner had records to prove it. It was for sale in Hemmings for around $15K. I looked at it and took it for a drive. It was a total time warp. The thing that amazed me was that it was still riding on its original 45+ year old tires. I would have bought it but I just didn't have the room for the car.

I will be looking at a '85 300D advertised with under 90k miles (original owner) over the next few days. That is all I'm saying for now.
