gas or diesel?

hey. im about to buy a mercedes. right now i drive a 300td 1984 but my engine sucks. im lookin into buying a 190e (1984-85 -86) or a 300sel(84)diesel. the question is: the 190 is a gas engine. how long do these gas engines run? some people r selling them with 150 thousand miles on it. is that alot for those cars? i know that the diesel runs for 500 thousand miles but do the gas ones die earlier. please help and give me any suggestions u can. thanx. –david pfdz@nyc.rr.com 646-267-1109

I have heard that the gas engines are virtually bulletproof too in MBs. If they are maintained correctly, they will last for a long time like diesel engines.

84 300SEL Diesel? If you mean 300SD, it has the same engine as you have in your TD.

A 190E with 150K miles will likely need some cylinder head work. At the very least a set of valve seals. It's a pretty easy engine to work on.

david,

You ask that question on the Diesel board? You must want Diesel for an answer.

BYW, the answer is Diesel.

a 300SEL is a gas engine. and if u meant a 300SDL, or a 300SD there is a difference in engines between those too.

please define how your engine in your TD sucks. if it sucks because it is slow then we don't want to hear about it especially the 240D owners.

from what i can see it is pretty uncommon for a diesel engine to reach 500K miles. a more realistic life would be around 350K. the people who do own those 500K engines take extremely good care of them. and if u are gonna buy a car used you cannot guarantee how well its been taken cared of.

there is only one answer, diesel. who likes messing with spark-plugs? not me. who likes messing with a dist. not I. who likes paying for those high gas prices? again not me. who likes the smell of unleaded gas? na, not me.
thing I like about diesel? the smell first thing in the morning with my first cup of the day. another tis the smoke screen opt. when people get to close. changing the oil every other month, and riseing the foam band around my air filter, and diesel does a good job of cleaning your hands without drying out your hands
need we say more? enjoy.
