a/c clutch not engaging at idle
The clutch on my a/c compressor won't egage at idle (it will stay engaged if I'm coming down to idle). A light tap with a screwdriver will kick it in as will a little accelleration, I'm assuming due to the engine vibration.
I'm really lost as far as troubleshooting. Any suggestions on what to test and what to expect? Everything works perfectly other than this one issue. It's on an 82 240d. Thanks much |

Is your AC cooling fine while it is engaged ?
Is your aux fan in front of the radiator running when this happens? |

Yes, cooling is fine and the aux fan is spinning. It really only becomes a problem if the compressor cycles off while sitting at a stoplight. I have to rev up the engine a bit to get the clutch to engage, but then it remains engaged.

Could be too much clearance on the clutch plate and low voltage at idle.

Voltage I can check with my DVM. What should it take to pull the clutch plate?
Is the clutch plate clearance adjustable? How would I measure it? |

The A/C clutch coil is acceptable if the current draw is 2.0 - 3.5 amps @ 11.5 - 12.5 VDC.

Well, I have been fighting something similar with my AC. At times it won't engage until I shut the engine off and start up, or pop the hood and mess with the wires on the reciever drier. Well I got tired of this, especially now because it is hot outside. I bought some battery terminal cleaner and sprayed down the connectors on the pressure switch on the reciever drier. I also re-crimped a female connector so it fit more snuggly. BUT, to get the AC to come on I had to shut the engine off, unplug the compressor from the pressure switch, then start the engine with the AC all turned on inside the car I reconnected the line and the compressor came on. It's come on everytime since then.
