The noise really doesn't bother me, I just turn the music up. The only make nose sometimes, sometimes a lot, othertimes you have to know what to listen for. I'll let synthetic work it's magic for 10k miles or so before changing anything.
I'll get the proper tool, I don't need to trash a $6k diesel because of a bad crimp. The chain and guide will also be OE Mercedes parts, no aftermarket on internals. I'll do the chain this fall around 240k miles or so.

Very smart move
"The Chain and guide will also be OE Mercedes parts, no aftermarket on internals". I recently made a OE parts order and figured that with me doing the labor-most repairs are running 25-35% of a shop qoute. Michael

To my knowledge Iwis is the only OEM chain supplier to Mercedes and at least used to be the most common aftermarket supplier. I would NOT hesitate to use one of their chains whether in an MB box with the Star on it or in the Iwes box. I can NOT say the same for many other after market timing parts (especially guides).

IIRC, my aftermarket (IWIS) chain came with a master link that had a slip-fit center plate. I had ordered a new OE master link as well, which had a press-fit center plate! Big difference there. I used the OE link. They're cheap, maybe two bucks? The chain is quite expensive ($100+, last time I checked.)
