fog lights

I started using them after I figured out how to turn them on.

Exactly.

Unless it's real foggy, though, I treat my fogs like I treat my high-beams...i.e. they are only on when there isn't the possibility of blinding someone else. Part of the "Do to others as you'd have them do to you" rule and the fact that I hate it when other people have their fog lights on, blinding me, on a perfectly clear night with other cars on the road.
Properly aimed fogs should hit the ground in front of the low beams, so blinding people shouldn't be an issue. Now for those that are not properly aimed...
I do, however, have my Euro city lights on at all times.

I recently rewired mine as always-on (driving) lights. Not only does it look cool , but It's far safer than normal driving lights (They need to SEE you, not be BLINDED by you.), did I say the look cool?

I have mine aimed to hit the ground about 8' in front of the bumper on level ground.

I use mine sometimes during the twilight hours if its also overcast because everything looks the same color. I also use them in bad weather, or if I think they would look cool at a particular time. And, they do look cool, don't they? I also love those old Alfas and Lancias with all amber lights-totally cool.

I'd like to know how y'all have done this wiring. Sounds like a good idea and I'd like to try it on my wagon.

When wired this way, do they stay on when you turn the headlights on at night, or do they go off then?

Always on when the car is running.

I don't agree with the position taken by at least one person on this thread, that the ambers are too bright to run all the time. I don't recall having anyone ever flash their brights at me while driving this car. And I've seen the car coming at me and it just makes it much more visible. Now if the car had clear fog's, that would be different, that could be blinding at night.

One stat' I saw said about 11 percent better chance of not being in an accident if one has daytime running lights...I'll take that 11 !

If you still want wiring details let me know.

It has never occured to me that I even have fog lights. That is, I never even think of using them. BTW, what real good do they do?

Lightbulb Fog Lights

Blinding people should be a problem, as mentioned before. The factory fog lights (on the w126 at least) are only 35 watts, and are go through an amber filter. In addition to those two thing, they're aimed lower than the low beam headlamps. The only time you're going to blind someone is if you are cresting a hill that they're climbing, and in this case, they're going to be blinded by the low beams anyway.

As mentioned earlier, fog lights not only add light to the sides of the road for you to see, they increase your visibility to other drivers.

General wiring guideline

Wannawagon,

I wired this completely from under the dash with no cutting/stripping etc. of the original wiring. I wanted the fog's to be on whenever the ignition switch was in the run position but not on when the switch was in the start position(i.e. cranking the engine).

On an '84 300D, the #8 (Blower motor ) fuse connection(X15,I think, on wiring diagram) is momentarily off at "start". Gray/Green wire(s) at terminal "N" on light switch is to the Fog's, while "30" on light switch is always "Hot" and originates from Battery connection at starter.

Use an Aux. lighting relay wired like this... wire(16 ga. Blue) from #8 (+) and another wire(16 ga. Black) to Grnd. to actuate the relay . A 12ga. red wire from terminal"30" on factory light switch to relay and same from relay to terminal "N' on switch.

Don't even think of running a "jumper" wire directly from #8 to terminal "N" unless you enjoy the risk of a meltdown/fire ! To do this would add the Foglight load to a circuit that is already heavily loaded. The Relay puts the load on the big wire from the starter.

This set-up has worked great for me, but "your results may vary" , so be careful. There may be other ways to get to the same result...if anyone has a better way, post it, I'd like to know about it.
