Modification you may want, "not".....

Hello Everyone
Saw a wild Modification you may want for your MD diesel.
Fuel stop in Troy, Michigan.
I was filling up when a 300SD identical to mine pulled to the other side of the pump.
We talked while the tanks filled.
He bought the car January 2002, with 300,000 miles on it, and has driven a total of 985 miles since purchase.

I can't pronounce or spell his name, he is from India.
He did not like the slow - hard start on cold days in Michigan, he also did not like the lack of power from a stop.
He fixed both:
#1. By adding three batteries to the trunk, bought a helicopter starter and adapted it to fit, he also had a custom flywheel fabricated with wider teeth and tooth contact area, he has a 200 amp alternator to charge the rig.
The engine cranks 4000 RPM at start.
#2. He has a boost button to engage the starter for an extra blast of power.

The engine cranks from Zero RPM too Four thousand RPM in under a second.
The kicker is that the boost is limited to five seconds or it pushes the RPM past redline.

Note:
He blew the oil pump chain and bearings on his first test start, rebuilt and added a high pressure pre oiler, then broke the timing chain on his second start and bought a factory new engine to replace the wreck.

If anyone ever hears it crank up, you will know it is not MB stock, it sounds like a double gunshot + a helicopter just beginning to start.

Hmmm:
#A. Purchase cost of car.
#B. New helicopter starter and fabrication time to make it fit.
#C. Fabrication and installation of new flywheel.
#D. Engine rebuilt once.
#E. Purchase and installation of a high pressure electric pre oiler.
#F. Purchase and installation of factory new engine.
#G. Total of four batteries plus mounting, cables and a bank of heavy duty starter relays to feed the starter 3400 AMPS.
#H. Purchase and installation of a 200 AMP alternator.

 He admitted that the starter/boost setup cost him roughly $19,700.00 so far.:eek::eek:
I don’t think I will try this, it sounds too expensive for my budget…. :D :D :D :D

He would have come out cheaper moving south;).

Just what I always never wanted to do.
I bet he could have bought the new CDI for less than what he's got in that 300SD now.

Yeah but then he couldn't do 70 with no fuel..

Just rig that starter to stay running and wait for the wires to melt. Or the batteries to die.

vwbuge 06-26-2004 09:29 PM

Sounds like an idiot to me.

The nice thick oil must love that on a 0 degree morning. Not to mention the poor turbo.

He claimed the first test start that trashed the engine:
"The single starter relay welded closed, and the engine cranked seven thousand + RPM, in under seven seconds, toasted all four batteries and broke the oil pump chain".

Blasted lucky the melted wires didn’t set the car on fire.

Ouch, he claimed to be an electrical engineer.
Gad, I hope it was not a test bed vehicle in disguise.

sounds like an idiot. ofcourse no he has to drive around in a 300sd with 20K worth of worseless modifications. instead of a newer S500.

Gives new meaning to word eccentric.

lietuviai 06-27-2004 09:59 PM

There's something really wrong with that nut behind that guy's steering wheel.:D

It really sounds like the guy is onto something, I wonder what the car will be like in a few years after he adds on a few more mods...
