how much $ for someone else to charge the A/C?

if no new parts required approximately how much would refrigerant and labor be fir a 1980 300td. i am not sure if it is the R12 or if it has been converted, my gues is it has not been converted, but that is just a guess
will

I paid $50 for a recharge, r134a, and a leakdown test. The refridgerant itself was $12.

If it is R12, adding about$60 to the above price would be fair. Depending on your locale, you might not get R12 done that cheap.

Lucky,

I just talked to an ac supplier in my area and he says that the main reason for system failure when converting fron R-12 to R-134 is that they don't change the condenser to the new R-134 cross flow type. He says that this change is essential since the R-134 develops more heat and the old style single pipe condenser can't get rid of the heat quickly enough. Apparently this is the reason that so many compressors fail on converted systems.

can any type of Air-conditioning place work on the MERCEDES ? Or would you need special type of fittings etc..

Aside from perhaps some complicated under the dash electronics in the newer MB's I think that any reliable auto ac shop can work on a MB system. I don't think that I would trust just any shop with some of the really new climate control systems but to install a new condensor of charge the system in an older model I think any good shop could do it.
