Master Key

I need a master key for my 1983 300 SD. The original owner couldn't find his. I dread going to the MB dealer as I will have to pay with my firstborn. Does anyone know where I can get one at a reasonable price?

If you want an actual master key then MB dealer is only option for about $35. I have not tried the keys sold at fastlane or other places on the net that sell the keys. The key's I had two different locksmith's make would not work the locks if it worked in the ignition and if they worked lock's they would not work the ignition. Don't ask me why, but that's what happened. The third guy I ask about making a key, said he could not make a master key for the MB cars and I would need to go to dealer.

If there is doubt as to age and wear on the ignition switch cylinder, then buying the switch cylinder from a dealer will provide you with a proper working switch and a master key for all locks for about $100.

The MB dealer in Springfield only required my VIN # and CC # and I had the cylinder and a spare key for $110 and they work all locks on the car.

Bite the bullet and go to the dealer. If you're lucky enough to have more than one dealer in the area, then call them all because key pricing seems to be all over the map.

Cool........Everything seems in good shape as the vehicle only has 115k miles on it. I will probably opt for the dealership option.

ironmonger,

IF this is your first benz? Depending on the dealership-they can be good to really high on the prices. I would ask them directly if they sell the parts at MB suggested list. Some due and many use a Matrix. If they will sell you over the counter and suggested list or wholesale, then they are a great viable parts source.
