Oil leaking from under injectors
I have a new to me 81 300D (non turbo). It appears to have oil leaking from under some of the injectors. Is this the heat shields I read about? Or is there possibly something else amiss?

No offense, but is it really oil? Could be a leaky return line or two. I'd dab a rag in it and take a whiff. Diesel washing down the outside of the injectors and pooling at the bottom can look like dirty oil.

Their is nothing to leak by the injector. Sometimes if you ust recently removed them they will bubble around their base. Thats compression leaking. My bet is that you have a leaking return line.

Yes it is really oil, soot black and reappeared after a trip to the car wash. It had me stumped as I didn't think there was oil near there to leak. I hope to investigate it fully today and will report back.

Since I think the precombustion chambers are more important than most people..... I remember reading something about the vacuum pump and the vacuum lines possibly allowing oil to be taken to the combustion area of the engine and possible causing the precombustion chamber to crack or burn .......
I don't know where I read it, don't know if that is completely accurate description of the concept they were talking about, but that is my story and I am sticking to it. I don't know of any ' passage way ' which would allow this... which is why I am unclear of what they were describing... did not get a mental picture of the route which oil could wind up in that location... Hope someone can fill in the correct details... might be applicable here.... |

My 77 240D has the vaccuum pump with an inlet and outlet. The 83 SD just has the one hose.
When the diapgragm ruptured on th 240D oil was pumped to and into the air filter housing, along with the ignition switch and brake booster. That how oil could get into the pre combustion chambers. I don't see how that much oil could be pushed as the pump is splash instead of pressure lubricated.
